Cardinal Sadolet's "Letter of Concern" and the Response by John Calvin (1539)
According to Henry Beveridge
in the preface to this work, Cardinal Sadolet was one of Rome's
"highest dignitaries" and was "an accomplished
scholar." His attempt was to woo the Reformers "back
to the See of Rome." But Calvin's reply, "besides containing
a triumphant vindication of the Reformed doctrine -- a vindication
so triumphant that Sadolet is said to have forthwith given up
the affair as desperate, is written in a spirit of meekness and
candor." This selection appears in Calvin's Tracts &
Letters Vol. I (Baker Books Edition), under the headings cited
below. These two letters appeared as a paperback book by Baker
Book House under the title "A Reformation Debate," hence
the use of the above introductory title. The following links are
