Reformation
Theology
Berkhof, Louis (1873-1957) His Systematic Theology may be the best modern Reformed systematics around. It has been recently re-published with an introduction by Richard Muller, along with a new introductory chapter by Berkof unavailable in previous versions. His manual of Christian Doctrine is a scaled down version of his systematic theology, and is available in paperback.
1) Systematic Theology, by Louis Berkhof
2) Manual of Christian Doctrine, by Louis Berkhof (An intermediate edition of his Systematic Theology)
3) Summary of Christian Doctrine, by Louis Berkhof (A short introductory version of his Systematic Theology)
3) History of Christian Doctrines, by Louis Berkhof
Bonar, Horatius (1808-1889),
Scottish minister / hymn writer. Bonar's emphasis is justification
and imputed righteousness. Here is a section from his out of print
book How Shall I Go to God: "How shall we go to God?
It is with our sins that we go to God, for we have nothing else
to go with that we can call our own. This is one of the lessons
that we are so slow to learn; yet without learning this we cannot
take one right step in that which we call a religious life..."
Definitely an author you'll want to add to your library.
1) Everlasting Righteousness, by Horatius Bonar
2) God's Way of Holiness, by Horatius Bonar
Bunyan,
John (1628-1688) His classic
book Pilgrim's Progress is one of the best selling English books
of all time. It is a fictional work with excellent theological
imagery.
1) Pilgrim's Progress (Penguin Classics Edition), by John Bunyan
2) Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyan (AUDIO BOOK EDITION)
Calvin,
John (1509-1564), Founder, oddly enough, of
Calvinism. The average impression of Calvin is that he is cold,
impassionate, and sterile, but you simply must forget all the
stereotypes and read this Reformer's writings for yourself. Calvin
is not only an important theologian historically, but his writings
are still very practical and useful for the modern Christian.
1) Institutes of the Christian Religion (Complete 2 Volume Set), by John Calvin
2) Institutes of the Christian Religion (Complete 1 Volume Paperback Edition), by John Calvin
3) Institutes of the Christian Religion (Shorter, 1536 Edition), by John Calvin

Chemnitz, Martin (1522-1586), A very important early Lutheran theologian. Many in the Lutheran tradition call him "The Second Martin."
1) Justification: The Chief Article of Christian Doctrine, by Martin Chemnitz
2) Examination of the Council of Trent, Vol. 1, (Vol. 2), (Vol. 3), (Vol. 4)
3) Ministry, Word and Sacraments : An Enchiridion, by Martin Chemnitz
4) Loci Theologici, by Martin Chemnitz
Colquhoun, John, A terrific Scottish preacher of the 18th century. The first book does a great job outlining the Ten Commandments, the gospel, and the differences between their two respective roles. The second book is a treatment of spiritual depression. As Dr. Sinclair Ferguson says in his foreword, "Colquhoun does not replace old burdens with new legalisms.
1) A Treatise on The Law and The Gospel, by John Colquhoun
1) Spiritual Comfort, by John Colquhoun
Goodwin,
Thomas (1600-1680) Heir to the Cambridge mantle
of William Perkins, and Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin became
one of the most seminal figures in the shaping of Puritan Independency.
Although relatively ignored in many surveys of English Puritanism,
Goodwin's lengthy and prolific career rendered him in his own
day second only in importance to John Owen among the English Independents.
1) Justifying Faith, by Thomas Goodwin
2) Christ Set Forth, by Thomas Goodwin
Hodge, Charles
(1797-1878), One of the Princeton
giants. His Systematic theology is a solid Reformed work, although
it is not for beginners. Hodge is also a very helpful and practical
bible commentator.
1) Systematic Theology, by Charles Hodge
2) Romans (Crossway Classic Commentaries), by Charles Hodge
3) Ephesians (Crossway Classic Commentaries), by Charles Hodge
4) 1 & 2 Corinthians (Geneva Series Commentaries), by Charles Hodge
Kuyper, Abraham
(1837-1920), Former Prime
Minister of the Netherlands, Kuyper was also a significant Dutch
Reformed theologian with an emphasis on a Calvinistic worldview.
1) Creating a Christian Worldview, (formerly titled: Lectures on Calvinism)
2) Abraham Kuyper: A Centennial Anthology, by Abraham Kuyper
3) Work of the Holy Spirit, by Abraham Kuyper
4) In the Shadow of Death: Meditations for the Sick, by Abraham Kuyper
Luther,
Martin (1483-1546) In 1517 Luther nailed his
protest to the church door in Wittenburg. He just couldn't take
it any more. He had to challenge the church's teaching concerning
indulgences. He had to challenge the Pope's authority. He had
to ask once again, "How is man right before God?" Luther's
theological breakthrough is not merely a fact to be celebrated
by all Protestants, but is a high-point in world history. Go back
to the sources....read Luther in his own words.
1) The Bondage of the Will, by Martin Luther
1) Christian Liberty, by Martin Luther
2) Commentary on Galatians, by Martin Luther
3) Commentary on Romans, by Martin Luther
4) Martin Luther, Selections from His Writings, by Martin Luther
5) Three Treatises, by Martin Luther

Machen,
J. Gresham
(1881-1937) As Machen describes
the liberalism of the 1920's, it sounds a lot like the shallow
popular Christianity of the 1990's. Extremely relevant; one of
the clearest, most lucid writers around. Christianity &
Liberalism is his most famous work in which he establishes
that the prevailing liberalism of his day was nothing short of
apostacy (preview it online by clicking
here). His book What is Faith should be titled, "Christianity
& Liberalism part 2," for it also is a strong critique
of theological liberalism, but this time focusing on the nature,
object, and meaning of "faith." God Transcendent,
The Christian View of Man, and Education, Christianity
& The State are collections of great sermons, radio addresses
and articles, and were compiled after Machen's death in 1937.
Don't just buy these books for yourself, buy them for your friends
and pastors!
1) Christianity & Liberalism, Machen
2) What Is Faith?, Machen
3) God Transcedent, Machen
4) Education, Christianity, & the State, Machen
5) The Christian View of Man, Machen
6) New Testament Greek for Beginners, Machen
Murray,
John (1898-1975). In the camp with Hodge, Warfield
and Machen, this former Westminster Seminary professor's works
are available by Banner of Truth.
1) Redemption Accomplished & Applied, by John Murray
2) Collected Writings of John Murray Vol 1, (Vol 2), (Vol 3), (Vol 4)
3) The Epistle to the Romans, by John Murray
4) Christian Baptism, by John Murray
5) The Imputation of Adam's Sin, by John Murray
Olevianus,
Caspar (1536-1587). Recently translated by Lyle
Bierma, Olevianus' classic work "A Firm Foundation"
available for english speaking audiences. This little remembered
reformer is thought to have played a part in the writing of the
Heidelberg Catechism.
1) A Firm Foundation: An Aid to Interpreting the Heidelberg Catechism
Owen, John (1616-1683) As vice-chancellor of Oxford
University, Owen was possibly the most articulate defender of
orthodox Calvinism of the seventeenth century. In The Death of
Death he treats the subject of the nature and extent of Christ's
atoning death. The introduction by J.I. Packer itself is worth
the price of the book.
1) The Death of Death in the Death of Christ , by John Owen
2) Biblical Theology, by John Owen
3) Sin and Temptation: The Challenge of Personal Godliness, by John Owen
4) Holy Spirit, by John Owen
Sayers,
Dorothy (1893-1957) A commited Anglican concerned
about the lack of theology in the church of her day, Sayers was
also an excellent novelist/mystery writer. Her book Creed or Chaos
is a must read!
1) Creed or Chaos, by Dorothy L. Sayers
Spurgeon,
Charles H. (1834-1892). Look for collections of his
sermons. Spurgeon was a Reformed Baptist whose emphasis was soteriological
Calvinism, set against the Arminianism of his day.
1) All of Grace, by C.H. Spurgeon
3) Sermons on the Passion and Death of Christ, by C.H. Spurgeon
4) Sermons on the Ressurection, by C.H. Spurgeon
5) Christ in the Old Testament (Bible Sermon Series), by C.H. Spurgeon
6) The Treasury of David : Spurgeon's Classic Work on the Psalms
Turretin, Francis
(1623-1687). Okay, so what
is "Elenctic Theology?" It is an english transliteration
of a Latin word elencticae which essentially means a work
of controversial or polemic theology. Turretin's Institutes not
only presents classical Calvinism, but also contrasts it with
the other dominant views of Christendom of his time, Roman Catholic,
Anabaptist, and Lutheran. Turretin taught at the Academy in Geneva
approximately 100 years after Calvin. This work is one of the
highlights of Protestant Scholasticism.
1) Institutes of Elenctic Theology, Vol. 1, by Francis Turretin
2) Institutes of Elenctic Theology, Vol. 2, by Francis Turretin
3) Institutes of Elenctic Theology, Vol. 3, by Francis Turretin
Ursinus,
Zacharias
(1534-1583) - Ursinus is believed
to be the primar author of the Heidelberg Catechism. Therefore,
his own Commentary on this catechism is an invaluable resource.
It is a great treatment of continental Reformed theology. A must
have for any Calvinists library!
1) Commentary on the Heidelberg Catechism, by Zacharias Ursinus
Warfield,
B. B. (1851-1921).
Known as The Lion of Princeton,
this great Reformed thinker's writings are incredibly relevant
for today. Here's a classic example, "Christianity is a 'historical
religion,' and a 'Christianity' wholly unrelated to historical
occurrences is just no Christianity at all. Religion,-- yes, man
may have religion without historical facts to build upon, for
man is a religious animal and can no more escape from religion
than he can escape from any other of his persistent instincts...We
may still call by the name of 'Christianity' the tattered rags
of natural religion which may be left us when we have cast away
all the facts which constitute Christianity....But to do so is
to outrage all the proprieties of honest nomenclature. For "Christianity"
is not a mere synonym of 'religion,' but is a specific form of
religion determined in its peculiarity by the great series of
historical occurrences which constitute the redemptive work of
God in this sinful world, among which occurrences the resurrection
of Christ holds a substantial and in some respects the key position."--
From "The Risen Jesus," 1913, a sermon available
here online, and in the book The Savior of the World, available
below.
