My current research interests are focused in two separate but connected areas:

  1. Semiotics (the study of sign systems). My interest in semiotic theory is to explore its use, not only as a method of critique for contemporary digital media but also more deeply as way of grappling with the different kinds of meanings that we make when we interact with it. My aim is to develop a semiotic model of interaction.
  2. The BENOGO project. My work on the Benogo project entails the development of novel research methods that explore the concept of presence in virtual places. To this end, as part of the Napier HCI team I have conducted numerous studies with people in both real and virtual places and have developed a new research tool called the presence/place probe.

These research areas are interconnected because my understanding of semiotics has played a role in understanding the meanings people make in both real and virtual places.
