The BENOGO project is focused on the development of novel Image Based Rendering technology (IBR), that allows real-time visualization of recorded places. The theoretical background for this research is based on Heidegger's notions of embodiment and in particular draws on phenomenological methodology to explore the notion of 'presence' in virtual places. As real places (with man-made and/or organic objects like trees, foliage etc.) are otherwise hard to represent in a virtual environment, the aim is to bring about new insight into presence in the computationally created virtual environment, when comparison to real presence is also possible.
