Ghana and Worm Week

Hi,

Well IÕm back from the Worm Week I organized down south in Batie. It went well though now IÕm pretty exhausted and looking forward to some down time in village. I have written a long e-mail talking about what IÕve been up to the last month. Unfortunately I typed it on a computer in the Peace Corps Bureau thatÕs disc drive is busted... so it might take me a little while to get it out to you. ItÕs probably just as well as itÕs mostly just this and that, nothing all that exciting. The major theme being that IÕve been having a great time.

My week vacation in Ghana was great. I swam in the ocean every day and IÕd like to go back there before IÕm done with Africa.  Go to Pictures Ghana to see my pictures.

My Worm Week went well. If I havenÕt already told you, itÕs basically a couple of days where you get some volunteers from the village, some PCVs and some health district officials and go door-to-door doing training on how to filter water in order not to get Guinea worm. It went well even though the day before we were to leave I found out that instead of having two Global 2000 cars to use for the week, we only had one. That caused some logistic headaches, but nothing we couldnÕt handle. IÕm glad that itÕs done, all in all it was a bit of a stressor, but it felt good to get something accomplished.

IÕm heading back home tomorrow. IÕll stop in Bobo for a day to hang out with Josh and his friend who is visiting him.

So whatÕs next on my plate. Well, lately IÕve been worried because originally there were no plans to put any new volunteers in Banfora. That meant that once the current second years leave, it would be just me in Banfora by my lonesome. IÕve been pushing to change that and it looks like IÕll be getting maybe one new volunteer. So in the next couple of weeks, Josh and I have to go check out the possible villages and see if it might work. Then itÕs back to Ouaga the first couple days of May for the 2nd yearÕs COS conference, a sort of congrats for finishing 2 years. Then I think I might take a trip up to the far north with my friend Mat. IÕve been wanting to see the north for a while and it seems like a good time to do it. After that IÕm not sure. The old guys will be leaving soon and the newbies will be coming in. Looks like IÕm confirmed to be coming home the 28th or 29th of July for three weeks.

Well I hope all is well. IÕm doing great, just a little tired. Nothing some time in village canÕt cure.

Talk to you soon,

Shaffer
