Unlike the glaring 2003 scene above, the Walden Pond bathhouse in the 1980s had a dull brown paint job. Sometime since, this bright first floor & cupola appeared. This glaring bottom is easily seen from much of the pond and shoreline. I've written DEM, the State Reservation, the Thoreau Society, the Walden Woods Project, and the Walden Pond Advisory Board asking why this happened and whether it would be possible to return to a less conspicuous paint job. No answer has come from any of them. I think that DEM tries hard, does a good job, and should be cut some slack. But shouldn't this be straightforward? Shouldn't the objective be to make any intrusions into the Walden Pond landscape as inconspicuous as possible? Status in April 2005: still white. (Above photo by Illuminations, Marshall L. Zidel.) |
