Above: The mystery man.

Above: an old John Burroughs (center) visiting his birthplace in the Catskills. Another sparse, rustic scene (C.F. Davis. Harvest of A Quiet Eye [1976] p. 13).

Photos of John Burroughs (b.1837-d.1921) to compare
with photos of mystery man

Below are other images of Burroughs and of the mystery man. No photographs, unfortunately, of the years 1882-1901. Conventional later pictures of Burroughs show him as a rumpled sage.

John Burroughs, schoolmaster, photographed at age 25 in 1862 (E.J. Renahan, JB [1992] p. 180).

This is an interesting picture of a mid-age JB. I have flipped it for comparison. It is from the 1870s, according to biographer Clara Barrus.

Above taken in 1881; it is very interesting, for it shows a natty and mature but not aged Burroughs. I'd love to find and compare more photos of him over the next ten years. (W.S. Kennedy, Real JB (1924) opp. p. 64)

This, of course, is the man from the mystery photo.

This is the frontispiece that first caught my eye. It is of a older Burroughs from my grandmother's copy of vol. XVI of JB's Writings (1912)  (Image is reversed for comparison. Date not known.)

This, again for comparison, is the mystery man.

Somewhat older, rumpled JB at Riverby (undated).

The above was taken about 1901, the caption says (W.S. Kennedy, Real JB [1924] front.)
