Fisherman at Walden Pond, awaiting winter, November 2002

One afternoon in late fall, while searching for the town boundary at Walden Pond, I noticed this fisherman, letting the pond be quiet. The water level is low after two dry years. The uninterrupted bright strand makes clear the origins of the pond--a melted ice block once buried in glacial outwash sands, and now without a surface stream in or out. This is my favorite time for walking around the pond, for people can stroll privately under an expansive sky.

The fisherman is sitting on the east shore. Southeast cove (the boat launch) is at the left. The railroad and Thoreau's cove (and the chowder bar) are in the distance on the far shore. Red Cross Beach is at the upper right. The main beach and the bathhouse are at the right. (Photo and page by Stephen Ells.)
