Thoreau Country: Location Note

Walden Pond from Pine (or Bare) Hill in Lincoln

1906 photo of Walden Pond from Pine Hill

Caption: "View from Pine Hill over Walden Pond toward Mt. Wachusett, April 28, 1906." Thoreau's landscape was in general both more spacious and had more distant views as a regular experience as people moved about the town. Walden Woods was truly a place of retirement. Thoreau's cabin site was in woods on far shore near cove in right center of photo. Railroad is at far left. (Photo by Herbert W. Gleason. Laser copy of image in 1906 edition of Thoreau's Journals.)
