Biography of Dr. Semeon B. Hrushovetz


Dr. Semeon (Sam) Bohdan Hrushovetz was born in Winnipeg on June 4, 1927. At the age of 16 he entered the University of Manitoba graduating with an Honours degree in Biology in 1949 Later that summer he moved to Edmonton were for the next 7 years he worked with the Canadian Department of Agriculture as a Plant Pathologist. During this period he obtained a Masters degree in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta and a Doctorate (PH.D.) in Cytogenetics and Plant Pathology from the University of Toronto.

In the fall of 1956 he returned to Manitoba to study Medicine, graduating in 1960. After completing a rotating Internship at the St. Boniface General Hospital he moved to Saskatoon where for the next 4 years he did cancer research as a cell biologist at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1965 he again returned to Winnipeg were he founded the Winnipeg Clinic Research Institute Laboratory becoming its first Medical Director. This was a private Research Laboratory associated with the Winnipeg Clinic. When this private laboratory dissolved some 3 years later, Dr. Hrushovetz decided to practice medicine. It was during his busy medical practice that he dreamed of establishing a non profit research foundation devoted to the study of aging or gerontology. The year was 1974. The research center was called the Kildonan Institute for Geriatric Research later changed to the Kildonan Institute of Gerontology.

From 1984-1993 Doctor Hrushovetz was also employed as a medical officer with the Workers Compensation Board after which he taught Orthopedic Medicine at the Manitoba Institute of Homeopathy.He retired from Medical practice in 1999.

For the 13 years Dr. Hrushovetz actively pursued a career in cancer research he published over 40 scientific papers. Listed on separate sheets are his academic training and appointments, his professional activities as well as his membership in societies. See links below for his website and email.

Dr. Semeon Hrushovetz married Margaret Dolhun in 1962. They have 3 children - one daughter Mary Margaret, and two sons Semeon Bohdan and Stephen Michael. All 3 are graduates from the University of Manitoba.
