Biography
I have always been fascinated by cross-cultural juxtapositions which, with my love of traveling,
is depicted in my work. Having lived and worked in Paris and Sydney, I was introduced to a huge melting pot of Asian cultures, instigating a series of visits to Japan, absorbing myself in both street to culinary culture. Spanish still life paintings from the 15-18th century such as Cotan, Zurbaran, and Velazquez, with the seemingly incongruous ingredients placed next to one another, have been influential in my work, as has Wayne Thiebaud’s cake pictures and the decorative aspect of Matisse’s paintings. In 1994 I started working at Books for Cooks in London. This enabled me to research the historical aspect of food behind the paintings. Margaret Visser’s fascinating account of “The Rituals of Dinner” fed my passion for making pictures, and being surrounded by cook books made me recreate the dishes so you could eat them as well as have them on the wall. From 1996-99
I lived in Sydney, working part time in a gallery which introduced me to a wide contemporary art scene. On my return to London I set up a gallery space in my fathers studio, who, after having retired from Theatre Design, had space available. We set about showcasing young Australian, Asian artists as well as recent graduates. Unfortunately in 2002 my father became seriously ill with dementia and we were unable to keep the gallery open. After initially exhibiting continuously, setting up a gallery and my father’s illness, I have concentrated on building a new studio in the countryside. Since 2006 I have been working on a series of Black Ink and Plaka pictures on paper after Hogarth, based on the demise of family life. A recent trip to southern India has re-ignited a new series of more seemingly joyous pictures and is linked with the works on paper.
