DESCRIPTION:
Pilates is a mind-body exercise form that creates core strength, improved posture, and general toning and flexibility. All muscle movements are anchored and/or originate in the core of the body, which is comprised of the pelvic floor, diaphragm, transversus abdominus, and multifidous muscles.

BENEFITS:
Pilates develops body awareness, muscle function and strength. Any physical activity you enjoy doing is enhanced. Pilates is good for everyone. And for those whose bodies endure extra stressors such as dancers, athletes, and firefighters, pilates exercises help keep their bodies functioning properly and relatively pain free.

HISTORY:
Joseph Pilates, a Greek born in Germany in 1880, developed pilates exercises to transform his body from its slight and small state to a muscular, athletic physique. While performing in a circus in England during World War I, he was imprisoned as a possible enemy of the state and developed his mat exercise system while incarcerated. Later he was released and was able to prevent several veterans from succumbing to the innfluenza epidemic by training them to do his exercises on equipment adapted from hospital beds. This is why much pilates equipment today resemble beds with springs and mat pilates takes place in such a small space per person.

TRAINING & CLASSES:
If you choose to train with me you will train in a West Coast style of pilates informed by the general fitness oriented approach of Body Arts and Sciences. I emphasize core strength to the degree of creating a functional, healthy body. I look for muscle balance and body awareness. Most of my clients seek a basic level of fitness with pilates as a supplement to their regular exercise regime. Some of my clients are trying to knit their bodies together so that they can play piano or dance for hours without recruiting overworked muscles such as the muscles in their backs and shoulders.
