Guardian: Earth spins slower than it should, causes problems in clocksEvery now and then I read something that
makes me reconsider a major concept I thought I had grasped. This is one of
those articles...
The Guardian has this very interesting article that talks about
problems occurring due to the moon slowing down the Earth's
rotations.
What happens is that modern clocks are all timed to atomic clocks, that are actually more accurate than the earth's rotation itself. They are trying to solve this problem by adding some seconds every now and then, but varying systems are still out of sync. This causes off-sets in many time systems and could possibly lead to major problems in aviation, science missions, etc. Good stuff. Posted at 09:38 EST Filed under: |
