Tri-ing to Help Others
If you are a family member or friend looking for general info and/or photos, you can find me on Facebook. If you are not already a Facebook user, it's pretty easy to join (and I would be glad to assist you, if you like).
The main purpose of this page is to facilitate friends and family (hopefully you) being able to sponsor my combined athletic & philanthropic interests. Since I started training in 2007 for my first triathlon, I have wanted my efforts to promote more than just my own health & well-being. This year I am focusing on two Olympic-distance triathlon events, and giving people the opportunity to support two causes I hold dear.
My first focus event is the Iside-Out Sports Beaverdam Triathlon (Olympic distance) on April 18, and I'm hoping some of you will support my efforts there by donating to RUNNING STRONG FOR AMERICAN INDIAN YOUTH. I selected this one because I am mixed-blood Choctaw (American Indian), and active Turtle Clan member of Kvnfvske Etvlwv, a traditional Muscogee cultural community. You can click here to learn more about Running Strong, and I would be glad to share more about my own traditional activities with anyone interested enough to ask.
My second focus event is the Pinehurst Triathlon (Olympic distance) on October 10, and my cause for this one is HOPE FOR TRISOMY 13 AND 18, INC. For those of you who don't know, I selected this one because my first son, Ethan, was born with Trisomy 13 and lived only seven weeks. For more information about Ethan, you can visit his webpages (click here). For more information about HOPE FOR TRISOMY 13 AND 18, INC., you can visit their site (click here).
Throughout the year I will also be participating in other events, as lead-ups or simply for personal milestones. Most of the events I choose to do benefit causes of their own, apart from my two charities of focus. So, if you aren't especially interested in helping impoverished American Indian kids or families with kids who have T13, feel free to select one of the event charities and give to them instead. Below is the calendar of my planned events for 2009, with applicable information & links, which I will update as I register for events.
- The Frozen 5k Race, in Cary on January 17, benefits the National Foundation for Cancer Research. I know I only got this page up and running a few days before this run took place, but you can still donate to the cause after the event, if you are interested. Click on this paragraph and check it out.
- The Coach Bubba Race (I'll be doing the 4-mile event), in Durham on February 21, benefits Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc. (TROSA). This organization is a local group that does great work helping folks get their lives back on track as they recover from addiction.
- The Great Human Race, in Durham on March 21, is administered by the Volunteer Center of Durham to provide an opportunity for any local nonprofit agency, school or faith based group to raise money for their programs and enables businesses and individuals to support the nonprofit of their choice. If you click on this paragraph, it will take you to a page where your donation will go to the Pearsontown Elementary PTA (yes, that's where Aidan attends school and I teach).
- The CROP Hunger Walk, in Durham on March 22, supports the Church World Service hunger relief programs. Janine and Aidan usually join me for this one. If you want to donate by check, ask me about how to make out the check. If you prefer to donate online, just click on this paragraph.
- The Inside-Out Sports Beaverdam Triathlon, in Wake Forest (NC) on April 18, is my first big focus event for the year. I am hoping for sponsors to support me in this endeavor by raising money for RUNNING STRONG FOR AMERICAN INDIAN YOUTH (see above, and/or click here for more details on that). The event itself however, benefits the B.W. Wells Association, a North Carolina environmental conservation group (please cick here to learn more about the group; donation forms can be found under the membership link).
- The Tour de Lions is a 75-mile bike ride across Randolph, Chatham, an Alamance counties (NC) on May 16, sponsored by the Gray's Chapel Lion's Club to benefit several of local and regional projects. Among the target projects are several programs to assist the blind and visually imparied, as well as Boys & Girls Home in Lake Waccamaw, NC.
- Neither the Jordan Lake Open Water Challenge (1-mile swim) on June 7, nor the MACFest Fitness Challenge 10k near Burlington (NC) on June 13, are affiliated with charities. They are just fun local events that provide the distances I need to stay on track with my training for bigger vents later in the year. (Running a 10k in June is good preparation for a longer distance in November.)
- The Buckner Mission Man Sprint Triathlon, also near Burlington, on July 25. More details coming soon.
- August events already planned, and will be posted here soon.
- September events already planned, and will be posted here soon.
- As I mentioned above, the Pinehurst Triathlon in Pinehurst (NC) on October 10 is my second big focus for the year. I am personally using this event to support HOPE FOR TRISOMY 13 AND 18, INC (see above, and/or click here for more details on that). The event itself however, benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (please cick here to learn more and support this organization).
- I'm not sure if I'll find anything to do in December or not. Perhaps I'll just take that month off.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too! If you have any other questions about the events, or my participation in them, please let me know.
