One Louder

A cold day Down South today, very British-like. I was down by the river this morning and there was a breeze coming off it that was just like the Thames on a Winter day. I've been listening to a lot of weird and heavy shit recently. I go through phases where even unlistenable stuff somehow sounds sweet to me. Whether it's old Frost, Trouble, St Vitus, Mainliner, Acid Mothers or Sunn 0))), there's something about drone-guitar that floats my boat.

I think it has something to do with The Blues but I can't articulate it yet. There's a sort of lazy power about it, letting the instrument do the talking and leaving any intellectual considerations aside. Sometimes I can hear a bit of slide guitar, or even the simplist Blues lick, and it sparks a sorta unconscious recognition. If you think of Rock 'n Roll post 1970 as a two-way split down the middle, with Sabbath on one end and Zep on the other, which one do you choose? There's only one path. I know which one I'll take.

I think music should be primitive. Beats to get your head moving, riffs to dance those fingers and hands, bass to thump the chest. Turn that fucker UP.

"What's The News, Where You Bin?"

And so the Pink Floyd lyric goes. One solatory entry on this blog for September is something of a come-down entry-wise. Well I've been, like, busy. Busy moving countries and it's only just now settling down. Not going to go into enormous detail but y'know, it's been a drag punctured by the odd moment of excitement. But it's mostly a chore.

I now at least have cable which means 200 channels of shit, a lot of adverts, but the saving grace is a 6Mb net connection. Now that feels nice given that ISPs in the UK are mostly either terribly expensive or basically crap. I've also sorted out the other element on my 'essential to life' list and that's sounds. Bought some KRK studio monitors and have to say they sound nice. Maybe a little forward (aren't all monitors?) but a very very good mid-range for the money. Got these puppies hooked up via Airport Express so I can stream my music from my Powerbook to these wirelessly. That's just plain nice y'know?

Anyway, should have the time to update this here page a little more often now. The next entry should be a bit of waffle about some music and games. Yay! :-) Oh, and I've added the album titles as a list underneath the artwork in the Listening Post bit over there, it reads clockwise from the top-left. Just in case you can't tell what they are.
