This shot captures the 'frontline' of a battle. The wall of Atta majors blocks the advance of the N.esenbeckii raid front, and individuals from each side strike at each other until the engage in head-to-head duels. In this case, a main Atta nest entrance was only about half a metre behind the line of Atta majors and they were successful in repelling the army ants. Unfortunately (for the leaf-cutting ants), N.esenbeckii were successful in entering a different nest entrance.
