Traditionally, there were many names from other European languages in
Holland, especially from French. Also, many people gave their children
names from the Bible and Latin names of saints. Frisian names are
very common in Holland; I gave some in Italic. The many immigrants of
recent years from more distant cultures have brought new names that I
have not added here.
Some names are in 'old' spelling, and foreign names may be spelled as in the original language: don't take the names on this page as examples of Dutch spelling. K and C are somewhat interchangeable, look under K if you can't find a name under C and vice versa. Some names can be written with either an -ie or an -y ending. Old names often have Y or IJ instead of the modern Dutch I in diphthongs EI or UI. The French ending -ine can be Dutchified to -ien with sometimes a slight pronunciation change, which you can for instance hear in Ine |
