BrUEgel or BrEUgel?
According to Dutch spelling rules, the 16th century Flemish painter
Pieter Bruegel's name should be pronounced
in the German way
(MP3, ca 40K);
but in Holland, it is always
said like
BrEUgel (MP3, ca 15K). I think most Dutchmen assume
that is the correct spelling.
A Chicago University Website tells me there are three
(internationally) accepted pronunciations:
BrOYgel, BrEEgel and Broogel (just FYI), but now you know
the Dutch way too.
