BENJAMIN GOLDSTONE led a Workshop on Circuit Bending for the New Media Roadtrip, a program of the Department of Cinema & Media Studies at Carleton College in the fall of 2006.

CIRCUIT BENDING is the term for altering [hacking] pre-existent electronic components [in our case children's toys] in order to make new, unusual and often musical sounds. Like all hardware and software hacking, it's about reclaiming and transforming the emerging technological enivironment to make it our own.

As Ben says, "Circuit Bending is all about making an object's brain go crazy until it sounds fantastic." Even a little Furbie.

Ben  brought along several backpacks chocked full of toys, speakers and assorted electronic parts. After a demonstration of his own instruments and working methods he set us to work on our own.
