Never Forget...

I am reposting this from last year, because I haven't forgotten:

I honor Charles Mendez:
In the summer of 1996, Kerri Meehan met a baby- faced guy at a bar in the Hamptons. She was so certain that she was his senior, she carded him.

Charles Mendez dutifully took out his driver's license and showed his future wife that he was five years her senior. Even as recently as a few months before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Mendez was carded at a bar, while his younger wife was waved past.

cm.jpg "He used to laugh about it," said Kerri Mendez. "He was 38, and they still used to proof him. He had a young face, a young outlook."

"Chuck" Mendez, a firefighter with Manhattan Ladder Co. 7, played beach volleyball in a league every summer and ice hockey every winter. He took up ice hockey at age 33. "Anything that involved having a good time, he wanted to do," his wife said.

"He had a million friends," she said. "We went on at least five vacations a year. I had a flexible job, and he could manage his schedule by working a lot one week. We went on a cruise every year, went to the islands twice a year."

Even financial concerns never held them back. "We never said no," she recounted. "We never said we can't afford it. I'd say: 'We'll deal with it later.'"

Those trips yielded a legion of friends, including Chris Caton, a firefighter in Yarmouth, Mass. Caton met Mendez on a cruise to the Caribbean. Caton and his wife frequently visited the Mendezes at their summer place in the Hamptons, while the Mendezes often made the trip to see their friends on Cape Cod.

In 1999, the Mendezes bought a century-old, two-family Victorian house in Floral Park with a big front porch. "It was literally falling down," Kerri Mendez said. At first, Chuck wasn't particularly handy, but he was game. Armed with his "bible," "Home Improvement 1-2-3," about a dozen other home repair books and advice from the guys at the firehouse, he restored the old Victorian.

going.jpg "He always finished the job," his wife said. "He never left the job half done."

On Sept. 11, Caton and another firefighter were driving down to visit Mendez and ride with his fire company for the day. They got a late start, and when they were still in Connecticut, they got a call about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. "We turned around," Caton said.

In addition to his wife, Mendez is survived by his mother, Doris; a sister, Patty D'Agosta, and brothers Tom, Steven and Rich, all of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn.

Mendez's body was recovered at 11:15 p.m. on New Year's Eve. John Brown, a friend from beach volleyball and a fellow firefighter, was working at the trade center site and claimed the body. New Year's celebrations around the city prevented transporting the body right away. So while revelers elsewhere counted down, toasted and kissed, Brown spent some quiet hours in the ambulance with Mendez's body before accompanying it to the morgue.

"I had a wonderful chat with him," Brown told his wife later.

"He loved his job":
Charles R. Mendez: 'I Have No Regrets'

Charles R. Mendez was a reed of a boy who grew up to be a "good sized" man with a heart to match, said his mother, Doris Mendez. When Mr. Mendez's father died, he was a tremendous help to his mother, even though he was only 21.

ladder7.jpg Mr. Mendez was a firefighter with Ladder Company 7 in Manhattan. His last job was at the World Trade Center. He was 38.

"He was sort of quiet but well-liked all over," Mrs. Mendez said. "He wanted to be a policeman, first. Then he was working for a bank but when the Fire Department called him, that was his glory. He loved that job."

Firefighter Mendez's wife, Kelli, said her husband so enjoyed his job that there were many mornings he rose early to leave home in Floral Park, on Long Island, to get to work. When he was not working, he renovated their old house, she said. He learned how to be handy by reading books.

"He was always doing something," she said. "We had a million friends and we were always out doing something. We probably vacationed five times a year. I have no regrets -- we never canceled, we never said we can't go, we just did it.

"He was just a wonderful, wonderful person. If I'd known five years ago this would happen, I still would have married him. He was it. He was my best friend."

I will never forget, Never.

September 11, 2007...

I am going to try and be there.  You should also:

This is an Action Alert!
Left Wing extremists are calling for flag-draped cardboard coffins, death count signs and people in orange jumpsuits to be displayed to our fighting men and women in another blatant attempt to demoralize AND demonize our troops and hinder military recruitment in time of war. When are they going to perform this despicable action?.....
On September 11, 2007.
Of course free speech allows this, but it's shocking that our troops have to suffer this on September 11th. Many Tucsonans are planning to rally for the troops at the same time but we would like to see EVEN MORE patriotic citizens holding an American flag or troop support sign at the Military RecruitingCenter, IN BETWEEN the protesters and the troops. Can you come out to back up our brave fighting men and women on September 11th? You will find many cheerful veterans, military parents and patriotic citizens exercising OUR free speech. Because we have that right, too.
Here's the plan:
Fill up the Military Recruiting Center parking lot and sidewalks at 2302 E. Speedway with patriotic Americans holding flags and signs that support the troops and their mission, especially on September 11th.
The time is 5:00 pm to 7:30 PM. Bring an American flag, a sign supporting the troops and some extra water if you can. (This IS Arizona!) However, there will be plenty of extra flags, signs and water.
The owner of the strip mall containing the Recruiting Center has given us permission to have the troop rally on Sept 11th. The leftists have been told to stay off the property or they will be trespassing and they understand that. It's really a win-win situation for troop supporters - if enough people can take the time to be there.
The troops overseas know what's happening here, and they often say how they are especially encouraged when they see a positive response to extremist left wing propaganda actions like this one. (The orange jumpsuits are being provided by World Can't Wait, a front group for the Revolutionary Communist Party.)
If our Armed Forces see only flag draped coffins, orange jumpsuits and death count signs it's unconscionable! Let's show them how much we care by showing up in force to support the Marines, Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard on September 11th. Now is the time to stand up for our troops and America!
SEE YOU ON 9-11 ....... NEVER FORGET........ the INNOCENTS MASSACRED THAT DAY AND THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN OF OUR ARMED FORCES WHO HAVE SHED THEIR BLOOD IN DEFENSE OF OUR COUNTRY SINCE THAT DESPICABLE ATTACK BY ISLAMO FASCISTS!!!! HONOR THEIR SACRIFICE; STAND UP AND BE COUNTED AS AN AMERICAN PATRIOT!
PS: Please forward this email to every patriotic person you know in the Tucson area . Ask them to meet you there to SUPPORT AMERICA/SUPPORT OUR TROOPS ----- ON SEPTEMBER 11!

I Think...

I think I am back.  I think this software is fixed.  I think I will add links back soon.  I think.  If my software is really fixed, posting will now return to normal.

We shall see...

It was a good day for America:

This has been a good day for America.
For a while, it didn’t look like Washington was going to listen to us regarding real immigration reform. Thankfully, we’ve been spared a serious mistake, but I wonder if things would have turned out the way they did without the work done by the bloggers, talk radio and the American people. Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, RedState, Powerline, Pajamas Media and a lot of others have done a great job. Take that, Fairness Doctrine...

Posting...

Sorry for the lack of posting.  I appreciate your continued visits.  Hopefully, soon I will be able to do more.  I especially feel bad about not following through with my Patriots Journey commitment.  When my posting gets back to normal, that will also.

You should continue visiting the other that are posting.  They are posting great stuff:

Drumwaster's Rants (the founding site)

One reason for the lack of posting is how I post.  I use a program called iBlog.  It is a great program that works perfect for what I do.  About a month and a half ago I decided to switch to the new version, iBlog 2.  It seemed to work well enough and I knew that it would just get better, but I thought it would get better faster.  Well, it didn't.  The guy that writes it has been busy (I know the feeling) and improvements have not happened.  You have probably noticed some of the problems.  The 'Link' link does not work, the categories are not posting, the RSS feed is not right and you don't see this one, but when I upload a new post, all 3300+ posts are uploaded again.  It takes about an hour.  A very BAD 'bug.'  There are other changes/bugs, but those are the most annoying ones. I have even been tempted to move to something like Wordpress, that is what Rick did.  I even emailed him about doing it.  I decided to wait until about July.  If the 'bugs' didn't get fixed by then, I was going to make a change.  Well, tonight there seems to be good news.  So Monday, one of the reasons for not posting, may be gone.  We shall see...

MH-53 PAVE LOW...

The kid just called.  Yesterday  she got  to take a ride on a MH-53 Pave Low:

The Pave Low's mission is low-level, long-range, undetected penetration into denied areas, day or night, in adverse weather, for infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces.
The MH-53J Pave Low III heavy-lift helicopter is the largest, most powerful and technologically advanced helicopter in the Air Force inventory. The terrain-following and terrain-avoidance radar, forward-looking infrared sensor, inertial navigation system with global positioning system, along with a projected map display enable the crew to follow terrain contours and avoid obstacles, making low-level penetration possible.mh_53j.jpg
The MH-53M Pave Low IV is a J-model that has been modified with the Interactive Defensive Avionics System/Multi-Mission Advanced Tactical Terminal or IDAS/MATT. The system enhances present defensive capabilities of the Pave Low. It provides instant access to the total battlefield situation, through near real-time Electronic Order of Battle updates. It also provides a new level of detection avoidance with near real-time threat broadcasts over-the-horizon, so crews can avoid and defeat threats, and replan en route if needed.
Under the Pave Low III program, the Air Force modified nine MH-53H's and 32 HH-53s for night and adverse weather operations. Modifications included forward-looking infrared, inertial global positioning system, Doppler navigation systems, terrain-following and terrain-avoidance radar, an on-board computer, and integrated avionics to enable precise navigation to and from target areas. The Air Force designated these modified versions as MH-53J's...
I'm envious.

Memorial Day 2007...

On this day 4 years ago I started this site.  Three years ago I joined with other bloggers to take a Patriot's Journey.  The others this year are:

Drumwaster's Rants (the founding site)

Right Thoughts

The Bastidge

Cosmicbabe

The idea is to "make a single post on your own blog - or as a comment in someone else’s blog (although you should post a link in that comment back to one of the participating bloggers, so that you don’t confuse the other people commenting) - of something positive about the United States of America. Once a day, from Memorial Day (May 28th) to Independence Day (July 4th) is all it takes."

If you have a site feel free to join in.

For my first entry this year I thought I would share this letter written by the Secretary and the Chief of Staff of the USAF:

Please remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.

Gathering of Eagles - Tucson...

We gathered at the main gate to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. I arrived a little before 8 AM. When I got there this is what I saw, as did those waiting to get into the DMAFB Air Show. How do you beat the Anti-crowd? Wake-up:

The Patriots had already set-up. Amazing. Pat, Wayne and others do an amazing job. I am always impressed with them. By 9 AM our side had more than 30 people showing their support for our fighting men and women:

We had a display of flags on three of the four corners:

More and more Patriots show-up. It was all positive. Great people showing their support for their great military:

All the flags you see were supplied by those involved:

We even had a truck (Who supplied this? I don't know, if you do, let me know.). All morning long it was cruising the gates, showing support:

At about 11 AM some of the 'Anti crowd' (as TPD called them) started showing up. By 12 PM they had about 100 folks (I guess the bus broke down.). We gave them a corner. They took it and TPD was worried about them (I had one my radios and listened). At one point, TPD was worried about them burning a flag. Nice. They never did, but TPD was still concerned. Notice how patriotic they are, see all the flags? Um, well, no:

They even dressed-up:

After dressing-up, some of them decided to come see us. Not a good idea, as most of the folks on our side are former military. The sidewalk was blocked and TPD (Have you noticed all the TPD links? That is because they do a great job.) came to our side for the first time all day. There was some yelling, maybe a little pushing, but nothing happened:

A few minutes later, they left. I stood next to a former Marine Sniper who was doing all he could to, well, not kick the s*** out of them:

We heard that the "Anti-crowd" was causing problems at the other gate. Some of us walked the mile or so and stood ground there. I was just like before except this time we were joined by some Patriot Guard members and they crossed to the other side to say hi:

What did the media have to say about the event?

This:
Tucsonans hit the streets in the name of war Saturday.

Protestors voiced their opinions outside Davis Monthan Air Force Base during the air show Saturday.

In the heat of the moment, things got ugly.

On one street corner, protesters wave American flags and hold up signs in support of our troops.

Directly across, an anti-war group asks for peace, calling the Bush regime a national disaster.

When the anti-war protestors cross the street, demonstrating what they call the American torture of Iraqi prisoners, things turned ugly.

After shoving, pushing, and intense words, police quickly try to get the upper hand.

Officers kept the groups separated for the rest of the protest.

Samuel Lucero's brother, a Marine, was killed in Iraq back in 2004.

"They say they support our troops. They carry those stupid coffins with the fake dead bodies in it, and I just think that's stupid. If they actually support the troops, they should be with us holding a flag, saying thank you for your service."

Others, like Felix Slette, support his view.

"Those people are defending our country. Aside from politics, without any politics at all, they deserve our respect. They've put their lives on the line."

Anti-war demonstrators say they do support American troops.

Chris Dashiell says, "We're not here to protest our fellow citizens across the street. We're here to protest the government's policy on Iraq, and foreign policy in general, which doesn't make me feel any safer."

Lauren Eggert-Crowe says, "The majority of Americans want the troops to come home and the majority of the Iraqi's want the troops out."

After police kept the groups separated, everything ran smoothly.

Watch the video (impossible to link, but it is right at the top of the story).

Gathering of Eagles - Tucson...

See you there:

You're invited to the Gathering of Eagles - Tucson at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Craycroft and Golf Links Gate or Swan Gate on Saturday 03/17/2007 10:00 am to 1:00 PM. Please send this on to all your patriotic friends in the area and military family members as well as veteran groups.

We're going to defeat them again! Last year in Tucson on March 18th for this annual "anti-war" event, 100 patriotic Tucsonans occupied the Military Recruiting Center on Speedway to stop a local march of 2000 protesters (with participants bused in from as far as Mexico) from vandalizing it. Instead of rampaging through the Center as they had planned they were forced to go across the street and stand there looking crazy. The Tucson Police Department Bicycle Squad kept a watchful eye out and there was no trouble.

This January in Washington DC, Jane Fonda jumped back in to the "anti-war" business in a big way. At the same rally, protesters spray-painted the Capital building after Capital Police were ordered to let them do it, even though the officers had them under control. The next rally on March 17th was scheduled to be near the Vietnam War Memorial! Concerned about this and other reports of war memorial desecrations, veterans started the Gathering of Eagles http://www.gatheringofeagles.org to protect the Wall. The Gathering has mushroomed into a gigantic rally to support the troops!

Here in Tucson, the "anti-war" faction, organized by the Arizona District Leader for Communist Party USA, has made a new plan. Stung by last year's stunning defeat, their current scheme is to protest the brave men and women of the US Armed Forces at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. They plan to meet at the Craycroft and Golf Links gate on Saturday, March 17th to picket, give a few propaganda speeches and march over to the Swan and Golf Links gate to picket there for awhile. If they follow their usual Modus Operandi, the "anti-war" radicals will vandalize the sidewalks in front of the military installation.

Why protest a military base, recruiting center or hospital? The military doesn't make foreign policy. The answer is that while some in the crowd may want peace and just don't know what they're doing, the leaders are attempting to demoralize our troops and our country to the point of surrender, as Jane Fonda and her friends did in the Vietnam war. Our military won every battle there but lost the "protest war" at home. Brave and victorious Vietnam Veterans came back to be spit on at airports and other travel stations! Will we let this happen again? No!

The Gathering of Eagles - Tucson will meet across the street from this protest and stand peacefully holding signs of troop support and military/American flags. As soon as the protesters move away from any area we will immediately inspect and scrub off sidewalk vandalization. Yes, we will be earlier and stay later than the radicals. Our troops work long hours for us every day under harsh conditions! But even if you can only stay briefly on your way to the Air Show that day it will be appreciated.

Come early if you would like to help set up and volunteer to help in other ways. Bring a case of water if you can. Also bring a flag or sign of support such as "God Bless Our Troops!" or "Home of the Free Because of the Brave." Be creative. Our troops have heard of the Gathering of Eagles and are watching closely. So are politicians. Even the terrorists wonder if this will hurt their cause. Let's show them that American citizens care by standing up for the troops and America! See you there!

For more informatoin or to volunteer email tucson4america at yahoo dot com

As an added bonus, tomorrow and Sunday Davis-Monthan is having their annual Air Show, Aerospace & Arizona Days.

It is time...

...to Take Back the Corner. Tomorrow is the day. Here are the details:
Hi again everyone...sorry to be a pest, but I wanted to make sure everyone remembered our special day at the gates of Davis Monthan AFB. We will be at the Craycroft gates (Craycroft and Golf Links) from 0800-1000. There is parking on the NW corner in Freedom park and more parking if needed at the Post Time bar and grill...

We will have plenty of signs and flags for you to use, so bring yourself, bring a friend, bring your family, bring your kids, bring your dog on a leash and join us with the japanese media for a morning of supporting our troops. Even the boys on base know about this event as I have made it a point to tell as many soldiers on the base as I could in my time working out there. Limited water is available so if you can bring some extra we would appreciate it. Our goal tomorrow is to fill all 4 corners of the intersection.

Come out and show your support.

See you there...

Update: Here is an excellent report about the morning.
