Monday - December 24, 2007Get a Mac...So. After years my brother finally bought a Mac. He called. He said, "can you come set it up?" I said, "sure, but you can do it." I told him to turn it on and follow the instructions. He just called back. He said, "dang that was easy!" I said, "I have been telling you for years, 'get a Mac. You will love it.'" He already loves it. The network works. The OS works. The updates worked. It just worked. He is setting-up parental controls for his kids. He is making accounts for everybody. He is sending email. I love it. Hehehehehe. You Windblows people have no idea how great we have it. All I can say is get a Mac. Update: We were just video iChatting. Cool. Wednesday - December 05, 2007Let the Games begin...It was fun while it lasted: After years of relative safety, the Apple Mac is becoming an increasingly tempting target for malicious computer hackers, according to a new report published this week. Security researchers have been aware of the threat to Apple since last year, when they detected the first piece of malicious code – or “malware” – specifically designed to target Apple. Over the past few months, however, the number of malicious programmes has increased, according to a report published this week by F-Secure, an internet security company. “Over the past two years, we had found one or two pieces of malware targeting Macs,” said Patrik Runald, an F-Secure security researcher. “Since October, we’ve found 100-150 variants.” The rising security threat could present a challenge to Apple, which has long touted the security advantages of its platform over those of Microsoft, whose software is a perennial target for hackers. “As Apple’s platform becomes more visible, it will increasingly come under the gun,” said Roger Kay, an analyst at Endpoint Technologies. Apple declined to discuss specific steps it was taking to counter the growing number of attacks. However, Apple said: “We take security very seriously and have a great track record for addressing vulnerabilities before they can affect users.” Mr Runald said the jump in attacks against Apple appeared to be the work of a single gang of professional hackers. The group, known in security circles as the “Zlob gang”, makes programs that infect PCs by tricking users into thinking they are installing software needed to view copyrighted video files. As with other attacks against Apple, the Zlob gang relies on tricking users to install its malicious software, rather than on exploiting any inherent software vulnerability. Apple sold 2.1m Macs in the third quarter, up from 1.1m in the first quarter of 2006, according to Gartner, the research group. After years of catering to a niche audience of Mac lovers, Apple now commands about 10 per cent of the consumer PC market, according to Mr Kay... Monday - July 30, 2007Keychain problems...Any other Mac users having Keychain problems? I can't seem to get it work. It wants to rebuild the database every time it is accessed by an App. If you did, did you fix it? How? Hmmmmm. Update: I think it is fixed. I did the Keychain First Aid and may have fixed it. Let's hope. Friday - June 29, 2007Hmmmm...I thought you could only get the iPhone at AT&T and 'real' Apple stores. Based on this, up at the Apple online store right now, I wonder: ![]() I still want to know if I can get the iPhone without the 'Phone'? I just want the 'i' mobile device. A computer, with OS X, in my pocket. Update: The store is back and you can buy an iPhone online. Cool: ![]() Friday - April 27, 2007In Between...Posting will return to normal again soon.
Hopefully tomorrow. I am moving to a new machine.
Yep, I got a new one:

Wednesday - April 11, 2007Mac Browser Tip of the Day...About a month ago I found Webkit. I still like it. Tonight I noticed
that Opera
had a new version of their browser. I have never been a big fan. This version
is really nice. It is fast and it has many cool features. I have been playing
with Speed Dial. It is a must
see:
If you try it, let me know what you
think...
(Note: Even though this post is under the category Mac, you PCer's can try it too.) Monday - March 12, 2007Wow...I am only pointing this out so you will know.
About a month ago, my battery started to fail. You should know that my
computer/battery was not included in any recall. After a couple phone calls to
Apple, they replaced my battery. By the time they did, it was expanding and not
in a good way. Tonight, I smelled smoke. I looked around and my power supply
wire was black. I felt it, it was hot. I unplugged it and now I am on battery.
I have 48% as I type this. I will go to the Apple Store tomorrow and hopefully
they will replace the power supply. Until I know, there will be no more posting
as my battery is going...
Just FYI. Even if your laptop is not under a recall there could be problems. Update (3/13/07): It only took about 15 minutes for them to give me the new power supply. So all is well. Note to "Geniuses," drop the attitude. Some of the users that come to the "Bar" know a hell of lot more about Macs than you do. Sheesh. I was treated like I just bought a Mac, when in fact, I have had one since 1987. I probably have been a Mac user longer than the "Genius" has been alive. The new MCE OptiBay Hard Drive was created for those users who want as much hard drive space as possible inside their MacBook Pro, MacBook, or PowerBook G4. Period. The MCE OptiBay Hard Drive replaces your internal SuperDrive or Combo drive with a high performance hard drive resulting in unheard of capacities in laptop hard drive space for all your projects... digital video, music, photos, etc. Two bootable hard drives inside your system open up a whole world of freedom and flexibility never before experienced in a Mac laptop... Scratch disk/System disk, RAID configurations, "System-dedicated" drives, and more. Plus, each OptiBay Hard Drive includes a portable enclosure for your SuperDrive or Combo drive so you'll still be able to use it anytime you want for loading system software or applications, as well as burning, playing, or ripping CDs and DVDs!... Now! Very cool. Monday - January 01, 2007Tuesday - November 28, 2006Friday - October 13, 2006It Does have Fans...One of the problems, well, annoyances with my laptop has been how hot it gets. It is a
well known issue. Apple did a firmware update that was suppose to help. I
thought it helped a bit, but this tool is awesome:
Sunday - September 24, 2006Windows XP...If you are interested, the article is worth a read, but this quote sums
it up well:
"This operating system has needed a steady diet of patches to stay close to healthy... You can think of Windows XP as a house with a second floor built of spackle, wood filler and duct tape," Pegoraro writes. "And even with all those updates, the operating system has met only a few of its goals while falling short of others in a catastrophic manner. And it's done so for reasons that can't all be blamed on XP's design or Microsoft's own actions. That, in turn, means that its long-delayed replacement, Windows Vista -- now due to ship in January -- may run into the same problems." Unlike the media, I will admit I photoshopped that image because I can open only three OS's at a time. Update: In case you are wondering besides Mac OS X , there is Windblows XP, SUSE Linux, Mandriva Linux, Fedora Linux and Ubuntu Linux. |
