Hiking along the Appalachian Trail on top of Blue Mountain

A two day trip up and down the AT in May of 04. Sun and rattlers on the way up, rain on the way back.

The only way off of Bake Oven Knob - Difficult!!
The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake two steps away -Adrenalin pumping
One distinct advantage of Digital zoom
Just in case you are not sure it was a rattler
What happens when you try to convince a rattlesnake to leave the trail
Rattlesnake sunning himself
I've had enough of this (meaning 4 rattlers in one day is 4 two many)
I assume this was a great view, but I really didn't want to get closer

Looking east towards Palmerton
The lack of vegetation is due to acidic soil from a zinc smelting
