Statement of Professional Interests

I have a broad interest in the Humanities that encompasses cultural studies and theory, especially as they interact with the arts.  I am also trained in philosophy with an emphasis in the philosophy of religion.  The convergence of these studies places moral, intellectual and aesthetic issues at the center of my interests.  My thesis and my primary research have been in contemporary music and the cultural impact of sound reproduction technologies.  These studies are supported by a 25-year career as a professional musician, audio producer and recording engineer.  Other professional areas of interest include race and gender studies, the intersection of technology and the arts, contemporary American fiction, science fiction, and film.

Statement Regarding Diversity

I believe that my long time involvement in the world of popular music gives me a particular ability to relate to college age students and to cultural phenomenon that are important to them.  In my music industry career I have had numerous close working relationships with a very diverse population.  These relationships have been particularly rich in connection to the black, Latino and gay communities.  These experiences, along with my 4 years as a faculty member at San Francisco State University and 7 years in the Community College system, make me familiar with and sensitive to a widely diverse student population.
