If you have difficulty updating to the new version, please follow these special update instructions" Virex problem resolved From the news at the: Fink web site 2003-04-16 - Virex problem resolved "McAfee has released Virex 7.2.1, which no longer overwrites the main Fink directory /sw. Fink users should continue to avoid Virex 7.2. Early reports indicate that upgrading Virex from 7.2 to 7.2.1 still leaves some problems however. If you upgrade Virex with Fink not installed, and subsequently wish to install Fink, you will need to delete the /sw directory by hand before installing. And if you upgrade Virex with Fink already installed, you should immediately run: fink reinstall openssl-shlibs dlcompat-shlibs curl-ssl-shlibs to restore files which the Virex upgrade has deleted". Fink 0.5.2 released The Fink binary distribution 0.5.2 is available to download from: fink - download "With over 190 new binary packages, KDE, Koffice and Kdevelop binaries amongst other various improvements this is a recommended download for any new and all existing Fink users". For more information, read here: fink - announce KDE Security Advisory Posted by Benjamin Reed at the fink-announce mailing list: "KDE uses Ghostscript software for processing of PostScript (PS) and PDF files in a way that allows for the execution of arbitrary commands that can be contained in such files. An attacker can prepare a malicious PostScript or PDF file which will provide the attacker with access to the victim's account and privileges when the victim opens this malicious file for viewing or when the victim browses a directory containing such malicious file and has file previews enabled. An attacker can provide malicious files remotely to a victim in an e-mail, as part of a webpage, via an ftp server and possible other means". More specifics can be found in the KDE security advisory at: KDE.org If you installed KDE with Fink, read the following solution posted at the fink-announce mailing: fink - announce KDE 3.1.1 Released to Fink Unstable This is primarily a bugfix release. For more information, read here: fink - announce KDE 3.1 Final In Stable KDE 3.1 is now in Fink stable. "Improvements over 3.1 beta1 include an updated audio driver, faster startup times, cleaned up fink package info, support for Apple X11's window manager, and many bugfixes. Binary packages will be available in the next binary distribution release". For more information, read here: fink - announce Apple X11 Beta 3 Released Apple released a third public beta for X11: Get Apple's X11 PB v0.3 "This third beta is available as a free download for anyone using Mac OS X 10.2.x. It contains a wide range of bug fixes and feature enhancements" "It fixes a number of bugs including a few that can cause problems with building Fink packages. It is recommended that all Fink users who are using Apple X11 upgrade. A new version of the system-xfree86 package (4.2-11) has been released to unstable that takes the new Apple X11 into account. It should be appearing in stable shortly". New version of FinkCommander FinkCommander-0.5.0 (Jaguar-only version) has been released. Download the binary on a disk image Or Download the source code "The source code version of FinkCommander comes in the form of a ProjectBuilder file. You will probably need the April 2002 Developer Tools or later to build the application". DO NOT INSTALL VIREX 7.2 "The Virex 7.2 package, currently being distributed free to all .Mac members, has a serious conflict with Fink. Fink users should not install Virex 7.2 under any circumstances. Installing it after Fink is installed will damage your Fink installation; installing it prior to Fink will make it impossible to install Fink without damaging Virex. If you installed Virex-7.2 over your Fink installation Check whether you have any of the following packages installed: openssl-shlibs dlcompat-shlibs curl-ssl-shlibs. Run: 'fink list -i openssl-shlibs dlcompat-shlibs curl-ssl-shlibs' If any one of these shows up, then reinstall it, either from binaries via apt-get/dselect/FinkCommander, or from source using 'fink reinstall packagename' (you need the December 2002 Developer Tools installed), How to use the script to fix Apple's X11 libraries It's a perl script, so you should be able to run it with: perl install_name_fix.pl assuming that you saved it with that filename. Update 11 February 2003: This script is not needed with version 0.2 of Apple's X11.app. To downgrade the imlib package Problems with imlib, libpng, and gnome in Fink's unstable tree The problem is with imlib, not libpng or libpng3. imlib-1.9.14-2 in unstable leads to the libpng problems. You might want to revert to the *stable* version of the imlib package. You can do this with: 'fink install imlib-1.9.10-9'
