FinkCommander Web site Latest version: The current version of FinkCommander is 0.5.3. This is primarily a bug fix release. Version 0.5.3 is included in the current Fink binary distribution. For those who want to stay away from the CLI, there is an excellent piece of software called "FinkCommander", made by Steven Burr, that provides a GUI front end to fink. "FinkCommander is a graphical user interface for the Fink software packaging system for Mac OS X. It provides an intuitive front-end to the Fink command-line tools for downloading and installing Unix software". If you are a beginner or use Fink regularly, FinkCommander will, without a doubt, make your life a lot easier. It displays at once, all available packages and their current status in your Fink installation. Including the installed version, current binary version, current stable version, and lists the current unstable version, if enabled in the list view. It also shows the package description and to which category it belongs according to Fink's archive. Another column shows you the status of the package, weather the version you have installed is current, outdated, or archived. You can run a fink or apt-get command by selecting a package or packages in the table (if the command is package specific) and then choosing the appropriate command by menu, toolbar item or key combination. In the buttom half of FinkCommander's window you will see the output message of the command you executed. In the FinkCommander Preferences panel you can configure Fink by changing the fink.conf file, and also set up Fink to use unstable packages or the packages from CVS, and in addition to source, FinkCommander makes it clear when a binary package is available. Often you might want to install a binary package first, in order to test the app, before installing the source version. FinkCommander provides an easy way to send 'feedback' about the Fink packages you are using, straight to the Fink Developers. It has separate positive and negative feedback commands in the Tools menu and the toolbar. If you find something not working in FinkCommander and you would like to file a bug report, the Help menu includes an item that will take you straight to FinkCommander's bug reports page on SourceForge. Be sure to include all details you can provide about the sequence of events that lead to the problem. Tip: Whenever you read that a new version of FinkCommander is available, if you kept the info file up-to date, you can then change the version number, and the next time you run 'fink update-all' it will give you the new version. Much simpler than finding the download site, download it, unpack it, and move it by hand. Features: Since version 0.5.0 it includes a package browser, which provides a Finder-like interface for viewing the files installed on your system by a particular Fink package. "The browser includes most of the functionality of a Finder window, including drag and drop and double clicking to open. You can open a new browser for an installed package via the Tools menu, the contextual menu for the package table or a toolbar item". "FinkCommander now provides easy access to a packages .info and .patch files, which are used by Fink to build and install packages from source. You can open these files with commands in the File menu, by double clicking a package name or by dragging selected packages from the table to an icon. You can also copy the files by dragging them to a Finder window or the Desktop". Check your environment settings in your shell startup script(s) against the settings in Preferences:Environment. If you find any differences that might affect fink, change FC's to match your script's. Delete your FC preferences: ~/Library/Preferences/com.sburrious.finkcommander.plist Then run: fink selfupdate-cvs and fink index re run finkcommander
