- eine Zeit lang erwog ich die verschiedenen Beschäftigungen, denen sich die Menschen in diesem Leben überlassen und machte den Versuch, die beste von ihnen auszuwählen. Aber es thut nicht noth, hier zu erzählen, auf was für Gedanken ich dabei kam: genug, dass für meinen Theil mir Nichts besser erschien, als wenn ich streng bei meinem Vorhaben verbliebe, das heisst: wenn ich die ganze Frist des Lebens darauf verwendete, meine Vernunft auszubilden und den Spuren der Wahrheit in der Art und Weise, welche ich mir vorgesetzt hatte, nachzugehen. Denn die Früchte, welche ich auf diesem Wege schon gekostet hatte, waren der Art, dass nach meinem Urtheile in diesem Leben nichts Angenehmeres, nichts Unschuldigeres gefunden werden kann; zudem liess mich jeder Tag, seit ich jene Art der Betrachtung zu Hülfe nahm, etwas Neues entdecken, das immer von einigem Gewichte und durchaus nicht allgemein bekannt war. Da wurde endlich meine Seele so voll von Freudigkeit, dass alle übrigen Dinge ihr Nichts mehr anthun konnten.

Es ist mir oft genug und immer mit grossem Befremden ausgedrückt worden, dass es etwas Gemeinsames und Auszeichnendes an allen meinen Schriften gäbe, von der "Geburt der Tragödie" an bis zum letzthin veröffentlichten "Vorspiel einer Philosophie der Zukunft": sie enthielten allesammt, hat man mir gesagt, Schlingen und Netze für unvorsichtige Vögel und beinahe eine beständige unvermerkte Aufforderung zur Umkehrung gewohnter Werthschätzungen und geschätzter Gewohnheiten. Wie? Alles nur - menschlich-allzumenschlich? Mit diesem Seufzer komme man aus meinen Schriften heraus, nicht ohne eine Art Scheu und Misstrauen selbst gegen die Moral, ja nicht übel versucht und ermuthigt, einmal den Fürsprecher der schlimmsten Dinge zu machen: wie als ob sie vielleicht nur die bestverleumdeten seien? Man hat meine Schriften eine Schule des Verdachts genannt, noch mehr der Verachtung, glücklicherweise auch des Muthes, ja der Verwegenheit. In der That, ich selbst glaube nicht, dass jemals jemand mit einem gleich tiefen Verdachte in die Welt gesehn hat, und nicht nur als gelegentlicher Anwalt des Teufels, sondern ebenso sehr, theologisch zu reden, als Feind und Vorforderer Gottes; und wer etwas von den Folgen erräth, die in jedem tiefen Verdachte liegen, etwas von den Frösten und Aengsten der Vereinsamung, zu denen jede unbedingte Verschiedenheit des Blicks den mit ihr Behafteten verurtheilt, wird auch verstehn, wie oft ich zur Erholung von mir, gleichsam zum zeitweiligen Selbstvergessen, irgendwo unterzutreten suchte - in irgend einer Verehrung oder Feindschaft oder Wissenschaftlichkeit oder Leichtfertigkeit oder Dummheit; auch warum ich, wo ich nicht fand, was ich brauchte, es mir künstlich erzwingen, zurecht fälschen, zurecht dichten musste (- und was haben Dichter je Anderes gethan? und wozu wäre alle Kunst in der Welt da?).

Friedrich Nietzsche Die Geburt der Tragödie (1872) is one of the most important philosophical texts of the modern period. The Dionysian plunged Greek culture into chaos and despair but also paved the way for the regenerative power of Apollonian clarity and rationality. It is this model that Nietzsche employs to understand both the decline of modern culture and the possible rebirth of this culture. In genuine tragic art, the Dionysian and Apollonian elements are completely entwined. In the music of Richard Wagner, to whom the work is dedicated, Nietzsche sees a redemptive power that can overcome the intellectual dichtonomy between the Dionysian and the Apollonian that characterises modern society.
