Holy teflon toxicosis!

Read traumatised Theresa's story (is it true? if it is, how sad!):
"In December 2002 a family lost more than 55 birds after a pan on their stove overheated when the water burned off. Despite their efforts to ventilate the house after they noticed the smoldering pan, one by one they lost three Blue and Gold Macaws, a Camelot Macaw, one Scarlet Macaw, 2 sun conures, 2 nanday conures, 2 TAGS, 4 parrolets, and over 40 cockatiels."

(Of course you find other, more scientific articles there, too, but this one is the eye catcher for pet friends)

Well, not enough, apparently it's not as harmless to humans as we think.

DuPont's Teflon® works wonders at keeping food from sticking to pots and pans. But after 50 years of use, evidence is mounting that Teflon's key ingredient, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), "sticks" in the environment indefinitely. Environmental health advocates are concerned that exposure to environmental PFOA as well as to airborne fumes released when nonstick cookware overheats may be more toxic than realized.
PFOA is a synthetic chemical used to give Teflon its essential non-stickiness. Problem is, the chemical is apparently just as durable an environmental contaminant as it is a finish on pots and pans. That is, PFOA doesn't break down. As a result, there's plenty of PFOA floating around. So much that one study, released by the 3M Company in 2001, found that PFOA was present in the blood of 96 percent of 598 children tested in 23 states and the District of Columbia. "
It's nothing brand new, but nevertheless worth to mention. At least I didn't know it until now.
Got the good tip from a friend today - just google teflon+fever and read for yourself.
[I distance myself explicitely from responsibility for the contents of all other websites I link to (except Karl's site), not only because I have to, but because I'm so damn tired that I don't even know what I'm writing and reading (nearly 4 A.M.!)]
