National Historic District Designation
(and what it means to you)
The National Register of Historic Places recently completed a survey of the
Sam Hughes boundary (Speedway to Broadway and Country Club to Campbell). The
entire neighborhood is now officially a "National Historic
District." Typically, any owner-occupied home that is at least 50
years old and whose facade has not been dramatically changed nor has a high
wall been constructed is considered "contributing." If your
property has received such a designation, you may qualify for a reduction in
your real estate taxes.
To find out your property's designation and to see a sample application, go
to the Himmel Park Library and ask for the materials. The application itself is
available from the Pima County Assessor's Office, located downtown in the
old county courthouse building. There is more information, including
applications you can download, at the State Historic Preservation Office
website: http://www.azstateparks.com/partnerships/shpo/spt.html
Now that our entire neighborhood has been classified a "National
Historic District," we are publicly proclaiming our designation with
signage at 61 locations on the perimeter of our boundary and "on the
T" (Tucson Blvd. & 6th St). Some of the proceeds from a previous
year's home tour and a grant from the Southwestern Foundation helped fund this
project.
