| What Did She Say?
(futurefic--major spoilers!!)
At the Security Office on Deck F, a gruff and gray-haired sergant asked Jodenny to take a seat in one of the hard blue chairs against the bulkhead. For fifteen minutes she had nothing to do but count tiles on the deck. She started to fidget and her stomach grumbled. She craved a hot cup of coffee with tablespoons of sugar poured into it. But another twenty minutes passed before reprieve appeared in the form of CDR Delaney, the Security Officer.
"Ensign Scott," Delaney said, eyeing her rumpled uniform. "This way, please."
They went down the passageway to a large conference room. Two guards, a med tech, and some officers Jodenny didn't know were standing inside. Sitting at the table were a teenage boy, a younger teenage girl, and a civilian man with his head pillowed on one arm. No one looked very happy, but the girl and boy perked up instantly when they saw Jodenny.
"Grandma!" the girl exclaimed, and rose from her seat.
Jodenny recoiled and brushed up against a lieutenant commander wearing a grim expression. He said, "She called me grandpa."
"Jessie, sit." The civilian man tugged on wrist and lifted his head with great effort. He looked dirty and tired, his hair was a mess, and his right arm was in a sling. "She doesn't know you. Neither of them do"
"What is this?" Jodenny demanded. "A joke?"
The Security Officer shook her head. "Stowaways. Most unusual story, though."
"We're not stowaways," the teenage boy said. He lifted his chin and stared defiantly at Jodenny. "I'm Kyle and this is Jessie. You're our grandmother. This is Terry Myell. He's your husband, or at least he's going to be."
The lieutenant commander asked, "Then how am I your grandfather?"
Jessie said, "You're going to be her husband, too."
