My Skiing Objectives:

Ski powder, ski powder, ski powder on great terrain with good friends and having fun. Avoid bumps and bulletproof. Maybe a cruiser now and then between powder hikes.

My Skiing Experience:

Mike&Rhonda
I have skied extensively since 1963, mostly in Colorado but with stints in California and Utah. I went to college at the University of Colorado and was a member of the CU Freestyle Club when it first started. I skied Lake Eldora after school with the club. We moved to Utah in 1991 and lived 9 miles from Alta for six seasons, We are now are back in Colorado and ski primarily Breckenridge where we have a condo.

Other than that, I have skied Europe (Zermatt), Heli-skied (Revelstoke, B.C.), cat skied (Berthoud(!), Ski Cooper, Monarch, Grand Targhee, San Juan Ski Company), done a little back country in Utah, plus skied in British Columbia, Washington, California, Wyoming and New Mexico.

My Figure 8 (or "Powder 8") Ski Competition Experience:

89Nat2
I have competed with my brother Todd in Figure 8 contests since the 1985-86 season. Our competitions have included:
  • Colorado Powder 8 Skiing Championships, every year from 1986 - 2006 except 2000 (they are no longer held). Placed 2nd three times (2003, 1988, 1992), 4th three times (1989, 2004, 2005), two 5th place (1986, 1990) and three 6th place (1994, 1996, 2001) finishes.
  • A-Basin Figure 8s, all years they were held 1994 - 1998. Finished 2nd (1998), 3rd (1996, 1997).
  • Jackson Hole Figure 8 Eliminations, twice.
  • Two Time Qualifier as the Breckenridge representatives to the Grand National Powder 8's at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, 1989 (pictured above), 1993.

My Top 10 Ski Area List:

  1. Alta, Utah (deepest pow in North America/steep cool terrain/attitude/price/no snowboards)
  2. Snowbird, Utah (second deepest pow in North America/steepest)
  3. Breckenridge, Colorado (terrain/town/Figure 8 Contest)
  4. Silverton Mountain, Colorado (Go there and see)
  5. Whistler, British Columbia, Canada (terrain) (never skied Blackcomb so can't comment)
  6. Mammoth, California (loved the terrain, hated the drive)
  7. Solitude, Utah (huge snow/cool terrain)
  8. Snowmass, Colorado (cool steep terrain to be found if you seek it out)
  9. Taos, New Mexico (Steeps!)
  10. Jackson Hole, Wyoming (great terrain, needs more snow, too frickin' cold)
