The American European Express special passenger train ran up SP's Coast Line and arrived in Oakland on Friday, July 21 at 19:35 with two Amtrak F40's and 12 cars. After a 30 minute station stop at the new Jack London Square station to unload passengers and baggage, the train departed for the Oakland Coach Yard. The train left Emeryville on Tuesday, July 25, enroute to SaltLake City. Following was consist into Oakland:

Amtrak train 570 failed at Eighth Street at 0655 7/19/95. Engine 233 was set out due to a crankcase overpressure shutdown. Engine 229 replaced it. Total delay - 1 hour, 15 minutes. Train 570 terminated at Solana Beach and turned as 777.

On Saturday, July 15, Amtrak San Diegan trains detoured on Metrolink and UP from Mission Tower to Hobart Tower. I personally know that trains 576, 578, 780, 777, 579, and 581 did this, and there were probably others.

The move at Hobart was rather convoluted because of the limited connecting tracks. And eastbound Amtrak would come down the UP's side of the LA River towards the yard, proceed onto the west leg of the Harbor and onto the Harbor Sub to Bandini Blvd. Then, reversing direction, it would proceed onto the east leg of the wye and far enough into the UP Spence St. Yard to reverse again onto the UP-ATSF transfer track.

    BURLINGTON NORTHERN

The BN hotline is reporting that earlier today the ICC voted unanimously to approve the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe merger. The final written decision will be issued August 23. The new company will be called Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. The railroad will have 31,000 miles of track in 27 states and 2 Canadian provinces. BN said the ICC imposed "limited conditions" on the merger but did not give details.

    SOUTHERN PACIFIC

Tuesday, July 11 saw the beginning of the installation of the roadway sections for the Carson St. overpass at the north end of the Dolores Yard. The pillars for the overpass have been in place for a couple of months now.

Considering the design of the overpass, its seems pretty safe to say that the road crossing will remain for traffic to transition to Alameda Street, which the overpass also crosses.

Southern Pacific's abandoned San Jose roundhouse, heavily vandalized by transients, has apparently now been vandalized by railfans as well: This summer someone stole the historic sign off the side of the building. The Santa Clara Valley Railroad Association, the group planning to move the century old structure to the fair grounds for display with SP Pacific 2479, doesn't know who removed the sign.

The first passenger train since the DelMonte is scheduled to run on SP's Monterey Branch July 28. Sponsored by the Transportation Agency for Monterey County, the special will leave San Jose at 2:30 and arrive at the Sand City Costco at 5:00. Equipment will be an F59 with California and Caltrain cars, plus maybe an SP business car. Speed on this line is 20 mph, so it'll be a turkey shoot. Train returns to San Jose on July 30 at 1 p.m.

Steam Garlic Train, July 29, 30) -- 2472 powering train over entire route. Will back from Gilroy to San Jose and turn (shades of the Los Gatos Branch) LV Cahill 10:10, AR Gilroy 10:50. LV Gilroy 4:30 AR Cahill 5:10.

The double tracking out here in the Arizona desert is coming along "smartly". The segment (a.k.a. Phase I) from Fenner (1st. siding east of Benson) to Dragoon (at the top of the hill) is now live rail, and the segment from West Benson (don't look at a map or a timetable for this, it's my own designation) is in the process of being laid with panel track. Panel track allows for a more rapid building of new track, since all ribbon rail trains are designed for relay, and not new construction. The new bridge over the San Pedro River (in Benson) is under construction (it appears to be of the "concrete trough" style)(although it will be south of the current steel bridge, and so, not apparant from the road), and grading is underway for Phase III (west side of Stein's Pass, on the AZ/NM border). Rumor has it that SP is actually going to double track the ENTIRE lline from Mescal to El Paso. Stay tuned for new developments. As of a week ago, the semaphores in Cienega Canyon are still operational, but the tricolors (which were installed 'way back in '91) are due to be phased in later this year. This makes sense, since in Sunday's (July 30, 95) ARIZONA DAILY STAR there was an ad for SP looking for signal maintainers. Another era dies. (BTW, the searchlights (USS H-2) are being replaced by tricolors on the double tracked segments.) :-( In today's locomotive news, about a dozen (or so) D&RGW/SP SD-45's GP-40's and 35's (its VERY difficult to tell the difference between dirty SP and dirty D&RGW units, but some orange striping is visible under the grunge) are being stored on the "rip track", just south of the balloon track, just west of the PFE facility here in Tucson. From a "flim" post, these may be the stored units that are being stored here in Tucson. Haven't seen an AC as of yet (but there is one "clean and shiny in Sacramento, at the CRM (:->)Oh...not that kind of AC...too bad.)

Oops dept. Apparantely, SP dumped several cars the other day in the east side of PFE yard (in Tucson), a grain car and two Golden West boxcars. When I first saw this there was a Dash-8 having a wheelset replaced by 36th. St., but I don't know if this was related to the "dump" (replacing loco wheelsets here in Tucson is exteremly rare)
