    ATSF

    This evening (Friday May 19) ATSF 202 was spotted in the house tracks at Hearne, TX couple to the Giddings Turn power. This turn works as a local and mostly likey picked up the unit at the Santa Fe interchange town of Caldwell, TX. A single new unit like the 202 being off line seems a little odd.

    ==========================================================================

    Question for you? Do(es anybody) know if ATSF 203 has been delivered yet or not? If so, do you know about when?

    Amtrak has begun using the 800 class Genesis units on the Coast Starlight. No. 11 on May 31 out of Oakland, CA had units 802 and 801 on the point.

    AMTRAK

    The new Amtrak station at Jack London Square in Oakland, CA was open to the public for the first time on the weekend of May 20 and 21. The open house during these two days was used to show off the new facility along with new Amtrak and Amtrak California equipment.

    Hundreds of people toured the new structure, with its soaring steel-trussed roof and glass walls. As a fitting connection to the past, the waiting area in the station has two of the oak back-to-back benches from the original Oakland station at 16th Street.

    Spotted on the station track was a six car train open for self-guided tours. The consist was as follows:

    (According to Amtrak personnel, Ex-Santa Fe Hi-Level Lounges will be used on the Coast Starlight trains beginning on May 25 as the new "Pacific Parlor Car" service. These cars will be added to the rear of the trains as a first-class lounge for the use of sleeping car passengers only.)

    The first revenue trains began stopping at the new station on Monday, May 22.

    ==========================================================================

    Oakland's new Jack London Square passenger station (OKJ) opened for service on Monday, May 22. The first revenue train was Capitol #722, with CDTX 2002 pulling a four car consist of California cars and a former Santa Fe hi-level diner. The train was backed down the Number 1 track from West Oakland to OKJ and then into the new CTC siding, arriving at 0708. The departure for Sacramento was one minute late at 0716.

    Coast Starlight #11 with 515 and 505 pulling 10 cars then arrived 18 minutes late at 0733. Number 11 also ran the number 1 track from West Oakland to OKJ and then entered the new CTC siding for its station stop.

    ==========================================================================

    Amtrak held an open house at the new Jack London Square station May 20-21 prior to start of service May 22. On display were F59PHI 2003, cab car 8305 Mt. Tamalpias, Superliner coach-baggage 31046, Superliner II Sightseer lounge 33027, Superliner II diner 38055, Superliner II sleeper 32103 Ohio, and hilevel lounge 39972 (xATSF 577, Budd 1956).

    The station serves the Capitols, the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr. Partly because of the switching that would be required, the San Joaquins continue to originate and terminate at Emeryville. Amtrak SSB1200 554 hauls #5 and 6 between the station and yard, allowing some nice street running shots along Jack London Square. Us old timers remember when Amtrak 554 was an SDP40F, the Zephyr's power prior to the arrival of the F40's.

    COAST STARLIGHT

    Amtrak's P40-8's made perhaps their first appearance on #11 May 27 and 28. May 27 had the 802 and 801 leading P32 512. May 28 had 843 and 832 as power, plus the first run of the new first class lounge, an xATSF hilevel that runs between the diner and sleeping cars in the consist. Like the glory days of American streamliners, if you're a coach passenger you don't get past the diner.

    Effective June 3, 1995, the San Diegans had a 4th Santa Barbara train added for weekends only. Northbound, train 769 will run instead of 575, 30 minutes ahead of 575's schedule between San Diego and LA. Southbound, 782 will run instead of 584, one hour behind 584's schedule from LA to San Diego. Also, train 788 will operate instead of 786, 30 minutes behind 786's schedule.

    In other schedule adjustments, 585 will run 10 minutes later than before to stay clear of the last Coaster rush hour train. With the loss of 587 on weekdays, Amtrak is now advertising a San Joaquin feeder bus as additional late night service on the route. Of course, it only stops in Oceanside, San Juan, Santa Ana, and LA on its way from San Diego, but it does provide a safety net if you miss 585 (with a 3 hour wait).

    METROLINK/SAN DIEGO NORTHERN

    The new Norwalk station site is making headway. There are towers for an above track walkway, similar to what was constructed at Fullerton. There are sidings on both main tracks to service the station platforms. The north siding was built out of the industrial track at Stevens. The south siding is new.

    The third track at Fullerton was cut in at Basta, however the track is not complete east of Fullerton Jct. Thus, the middle track at Fullerton is still referred to as the South Track, probably until the second main is complete on the San Diego main from Fullerton Jct to CP La Palma. There is a tie replacement program going on the North Track, using up one of the yard tracks at Fullerton. In finishing all of the work at Fullerton, the Santa Fe is employing three work trains.

    At the junction of the San Diego and Orange Sub, Track #1 is still out of service and a 25MPH slow order is in affect on the #2 Track. Thus, there is no siding between East Anaheim (which is west of the Stadium stop) and Santa Ana.

    At Santa Ana, work on the second track over the I-5 freeway is starting.

    Work has started again on the second main track from CP Aliso in Tustin to CP Venta at Irvine. The overpass over the new Culver Rd. underpass is complete, allowing for the lifting of a 50-70MPH slow order over the shoo-fly.

    Down in San Diego county, the new storage and maintanence area north of Oceanside is progressing. A new control point, CP Mesa, has been added north of the bridge north of CP Westbrook. At least three storage tracks are being laid, with an additional track heading towards an area that might have an engine service area. In addition, there seems to be a second track continuing east of CP Mesa; it could simply be a drill track for the yard, or its the start of a second main headed towards Oceanside. This would be a major task, as they would have to build a second bridge over the lagoon.

    JUNE 3, Sat--- Metrolink's new F59PH-I entered revenue service last week. Though supposed to be used on the San Clarita Line and Oxnard run (I think), one engine (number unknown) was on Oceanside train #604 on Friday 6/2. There is a lot more white paint on these engines than the regular F59PH's.

    A schedule adjustment will occur on June 19 for Metrolink. There shouldn't be a major changes until the fall, when Riverside-Irvine starts (2 round trips).

    The Coaster started special Friday night trains May 19. Two round trips between Oceanside and San Diego, probably using one consist. Also, effective June 5, there will be two roundtrips in the middle of day, again probably using one consist.

    In track construction news, the new storage yard at Stuart Mesa north of Oceanside is progressing, with a CP Stuart added about 1/2 north of CP Mesa, which is where the northbound lanes of the I-5 go over the tracks. Track laying in the yard is also progressing, but there was more progress on the access road to the new yard area.

    In Fullerton, most trains and dispatchers now are referring to the old South Track as the Middle Main. While I haven't had a chance to inspect Fullerton Jct. from the ground, I'd say that it's a safe bet that anything lined onto the new South Track at Basta will go onto the San Diego Sub's #2 main track (when its done!).

    MORRISON KNUDSEN

    As a locomotive builder Morrison Knudsen Corp. may be following companies such as Ignals Shipbuilding into the obscure back section of the next issue of Diesel Spotters Guide, if something doesn't happen very soon. According to a recent Chicago Tribune story the company is fighting for it's life!

    The company had a $122 million debt payment due on June 2nd and has been in the process of securing new financing to avoid bankruptcy. The terms of the banks offers, the story said, have so far been unacceptable to MK. The company has been skating near bankruptcy for several months due to it's ailing rail and transit units.

    The rail and transit units were put up for sale three months ago, but so far no buyers have been found. It is speculated buyers are waiting to see if the company goes bankrupt so they can pick up the unit at a bargain price. Reportedly, Bombardier and/or German based Siemen's Transportation Group may then step in to try to acquire the MK Rail operations.

    MK has a $379 million contract to rehabilitate 173 bi-level rail coaches for Metra and 140 electric rail cars for them. Metra is reportedly very anxious about MK's financial situation. They are a year behind schedule with the coaches and 6 mos. behind schedule with the rail cars.

    One of the big problems for MK, the report said, is that they have been unable to reconcile their books. This has made it impossible for them to file quarterly financial reports. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the transit division may have contributed $252 million to MK's $310 million loss last year.

    Brent Brandon, a spokesman for MK, reportedly said, the loss is blamed on the problems with the Metra order, higher than expected engineering costs, lack of materials and late delivery penalties for 50 intercity cars and 113 commuter cars for the Calif. DOT.

    The transit unit employs 1,863 people in several facilities.

    NYS&W

    May 30, Tue...On Saturday, all three NYS&W SD70M's were still at VMV in Paducah, KY. 4050 had been expected to ship out by Friday of last week. However, it was sitting inside the "tank shop" with all of its long hood doors open. An EMD field service rep fired up 4050 last Tuesday evening and was testing it. Appareantly, some unexpected problems have developed, requiring the attention of the shop crews.

    4052 and 4054 were sitting outside. 4052's paint job was completed, while 4054 was in yellow-and-black with lettering and numbering applied, but with some masking still over the grilles, etc.

    Don't know when any of these engines will ship. Although an EMD rep had said 4050 was supposed to be gone by now, it's still at Paducah. So, right now, I'm not going to believe any "delivery schedules" until I see the three engines actually leave VMV.

    The ATSF SD75M #202 was picked up at Hearne, TX this morning by SP train DASAF (Dallas-San Antonio/Intermodal for MBSMF to be added at San Antonio) at approximately 9:30AM. Suprisingly the Santa Fe unit was added as the lead unit (rare). The consist of the DASAF upon departing Hearne looked like this: ATSF202/7779/GECX7499(ex ATSF). As luck would have it (and I do mean LUCK) this train met the CLAIC (Coleto Creek-Axial Mine) empty coal train at the first siding west of Hearne. The CLAIC's power looked like this: SP106/111/110 a trio of NEW AC4400CW's!! Needless to say the occasion made for a nice picture. Tehachapi Troopers eat your heart out!!

    SP OAKLAND

    SP's 16th Street interlocking plant went down around 2:00 on Memorial Day (5/29) bringing everything to a standstill into and out of Oakland for a half hour. TR 724 had just arrived at Jack London and was held until 2:27, giving irate passengers ample time to explore the new station or enjoy a smoke. Had the Capitol been on time (a very uncommon occurance), it might have gotten out before the problems began.

    SAN JOSE REPORT

    Mornings are a good time to hang out in San Jose. The San Jose Turn (OASJM) arrives via the Mulford Line between 8-8:30 and usually has first-generation power in its consist. The week of May 22 had Kodachrome SD9 4377, GP9's 3370, 3390 and passenger GP9 3194 for power.

    Amtrak #11 generally arrives between 8:30-9 and featured F40's, P32's and the new P40's the week of May 22. The train's consist is going through changes with the new Superliner II cars, first class lounge and new power. If you haven't shot this train in a while now is a good time.

    Next the CIBAT (City of Industry-Bay Area Intermodal) comes roaring through town and up the Mulford line between 8:30-9:30. Power is usually SD40's and 45's. Amtrak 721 arrives between 11 and 11:30 and as soon as it passes Newhall yard the San Jose Turn sometimes heads back for Oakland. TR 721's power is almost always F59's, with California cars spliced by an xATSF diner.

    Sometimes there'll be a switch move between Newhall Yard and Warm Springs, allowing shots in San Jose's older areas along the route. Staying on top of the action is easy as all movements are well discussed on the radio. Eastbound trains release the Mulford and Alvarado blocks when they reach Newark, then the Albrae talking detector (MP 33.2) gives notice that a train is approaching. Freqs to monitor are SP road: 160.320; SP San Jose switch: 161.550; and Amtrak control: 160.815. It is possible to shoot trains in Alviso or Agnew and then beat them to San Jose, but remember: Responsible railfans never exceed the posted speed limit.

    YOLO REPORT from Matt Vurek Yolo Shortline's xSP 0-6-0 1233 is still under repair in Woodland and may not see service until July. The engine formerly had been on display at the Yolo County fairgrounds. Memorial Day excursions featured 50-tonner #50, two vistagons, two coaches (xSAL, xATSF) and an xSP economy baggage car. Passenger count was sparse on Monday. The train ran from Woodland to Lovdal at 10:00 and 2:00.

    It is official now: NS will deliver the remaining SP AC units instead of CR. We went to Bellevue, Ohio on May 28, 1995 and train 305 had 2 SP units in the consist: numbers 181 and 183. In talking to the yardmaster, NS will finish the deliveries. SP upped their order to 281 now so we have about 200 more to go (see). CR wanted the units delivered "dead" in tow and SP wanted them idling in the consist. Well, CR not too concerned with what the customer wanted, did it their way, so SP changed transportation agent.

    CR lately seems to have an aversion to running pool power. All we see is the unclean big blue. How boring. Oh well, it is their road so they can run whatever they want :)

    May 31, 1995--- Three WC SD45s are in the yard at Bakersfield on a coal train going to Trona. The power was, SP7501, SP 8386, ATSF 5329 (WC?), WC 6582, WC 6571. All units are runnind and are in 4 rail at the east end of the yard by Quantico.

    At about 9:30PM 6/3/95, the BKDOU (the cans) with 78 loads struck an automobile at 40th Street East in Palmdale. Four teenagers died and a fifth went to a hospital. Southern Pacific reported that gates were functioning properly and there are reports that the car passed another automobile stopped at the gates.

    UNION PACIFIC

    According to the UP PR department today CNW SD38-2 #6650 will be the first CNW unit repainted into UP colors. It will enter the North Little Rock paint shop on Friday 6/2. When it comes out it will be UP #2806 (numbered after the ex-C&IM SD38-2s). It will then go to North Platte where it will be placed in hump service.
    Sean Graham-White

    ==========================================================================

    CNW SD38-2 #6650 arrived in North Little Rock, AR on Memorial Day. The unit is to be placed into Jenks Shops for repainting into UP 2806. The UP hotline verifies this to be done on Friday 6/2. The unit will be re-assigned to North Platte hump service.

    This is among various other power re-assignments that are a sign of continuing integration. Most CCS/ATC equipped CNW units are to stay on the Chicago to North Platte corridor. This has displaced many SD40-2s and GP40s resulting in UP power to fill in. Green Bay, WI reportedly had two UP 2300's (GP38-2's) for local service.

    For me, these items truly mark the end of the C&NW.

    TRIPPING

    June 3rd, 13:30, (BEALVILLE, CA)..."About an hour ago an eastbound 991 came through with five GE's on the point. It sounded great coming up the hill. Sue said, 'It sounds like an airplane.' She was right. Another eastbound is coming, it is far away but it can be heard coming up the hill..."

    So begins my first journal entry to my trip last weekend to the Tehachapi mountains. It was my first trip there in a while and my first railfan trip ever with Sue, my new wife. We negotiated this trip. I don't think she was really looking forward to it, but there were some things she wanted me to do, so we traded.

    That morning we had breakfast with some friends who live in the Bakersfield area. When we went to the Sfe yard at 11:10 we saw SP6803. In the SP yard in Bakersfield at 11:40 was 6317, 6344, RG5501, Sfe8058, RG3134, 7357r. On the hill it wasn't too hot or too cold. The grass was about halfway between green and brown, it seems the higher we went, the greener it got. Flowers were plentiful. The prettiest flowers were lavender, like little purple patches, everywhere. They were delicate and prolific, also prolific and not so delicate were the trains. We saw lots of trains, especially in the evening.

    An eastbound SP went through Bealville at 15:15 that had 9197, WC6582, Sfe5329, 8330 (3xSD45, SD40T-2.) It also had a set of helpers. I gave her a tour of the area. We hiked a little and we went to the loop and saw all the loop potatoes. We went into the back country above Cable and got some great shots in the evening light. At Cable we saw an SP westbound at 19:30 with 7855, 8509, 9327, 7831 (B30-7, SD40T-2, SD45, B30-7.) It was nice seeing the face of an SP boat on the point of a train in what used to be GE country. When I first started shooting BAK/TF they were running U28C's, U30C's and U33C's there. We had dinner at the Mountain Inn in Tehachapi and I showed her the model RR in the restaurant. We then drove to Mojave where it was very windy. The infamous Mojave Zepher was in full force!

    The next morning at Mojave I got up early, got my coffee, and went to the tracks while the wife stayed in bed at the motel room (Motel 6). SP 9810 and 9803 (I love that number series. Alco fans never die.) got on the point of an eastbound along with 8373 & 8310 and sat in lovely morning light. I had not yet photographed the SP wide nosed units so this was a real treat for me. I saw a lot of them there. You can really see the bigger wheels they have. Sfe trains went racing by while the 9810 and sisters pumped up their brakes.

    I have seen so many trains through a viewfinder that when the 9810 pulled I sat down my camera and just watched it negotiate the switches. It is so neat watching trains and so easy to forget to when you have a camera to your face. As the 9810 started pulling I heard the Sfe 219 talk to the dispatcher from Bissell, way cool!

    After the SP left I heard the Mojave Flyer talking as it was getting ready to leave from the west end. I boogied over there to see the train. It had RG5401 on the point with C&NW 7021. What that was doing here I do not know (SD40T-2, SD50.)

    Shortly thereafter the coal train that had the 219 on the point swung into view. It had 219, 206 and 222 on the point and 5135, UP6348, UP9172, UP6186 as helpers. It stopped for coffee at Mojave very briefly at 10:25. Right behind it was a Sfe 899 train. It asked permission to pass the coal train on the double track. It had 97 on the point, followed by 5047, and the 100 (FP45, SD40-2, GP60W.) It caught up with and overtook the coal train near Cameron, the old and new screaming uphill side by side.

    It was after 11:00 when I got back to the room. Sue was not mad at me for being so late, but was in fact quite rested and content. As the sun was high in the sky we went to brunch. We then drove to Bealville. About a half dozen trains went through in the top light. I have a theory, There are about the same number of good shooting hours in winter as in summer, it's just that in the winter the sun is good all day long.

    The coal train came through Bealville right after we got there providing another glimpse of the big GM's. Then another westbound and a set of light helpers drifted down the hill. Then it got quiet. The scanner stopped talking so much. We spread a blanket under the tree on the top of the hill at Bealville and fell asleep. Forty-five minutes later the horn of another set of light helpers drifting down woke us up.

    Then we heard an eastbound click off the draggers, west of Edison and then east of Bena. We packed up and headed to Caliente and went up the hill above the horseshoe curve. From where we were you could see him round the curve and start up the hill. As he dug his shoulders into the grade he started to slow. After he passed, we went up by tunnel five and there shot our last train for the trip. We went to Dublin, CA at 10:00 and picked up my youngest son from my sisters and arrived home close to midnight. As I drifted off to sleep with my new railfan buddy I could hear, still echoing in my ears, the squeal of flanges on curves and the dynamic brakes of trains now history.
