MURPHY RIDES THE FLEXLINER
Sunday afternoon my mother calls to cancel the annual-weekly beach trip to Laguna Beach. So now I have to figure what to do on my Monday off. HEY! The Flexliner is running the dual-San Diego run, why not do that. So being the fan that I am I go down to the station and get a round trip to LA. I am going to take the 577/578. I am even going to take my laptop and listen to CD's and type a trip report while I'm at it.

Yea, right. Well, I ended up taking my headphones to plug in and listen to the scratchy stations that are programmed in, and also listen to the one channel that is constantly searching for a station. I also took along some reading material.

I got there early and looked in greater detail than I did Saturday, when I went to Oceanside via the Flexliner. The coupling is very similiar to the San Diego Trolley.

All in all I found the Flexliner to be very comfortable and smooth. It was fun to see a 'steward' come down the aisle with a beverage cart like on a plane. I am expecting to find a Conductor on my next plane filght to punch my ticket! On Saturday, I traveled with a gal that is a brakeman on the Campo Steam Train. We did take privledges with the 'steward', but we did apologize to him.

Back to Monday. I very much enjoy the positive forward movement and the speed of acceleration. When your used to hearing the F40 horn the European version takes a little getting used to. It actually sounds a little like the Metrolink. The ammenities inside are of course for the demo, but the travel map with the lights is nice to see. Of course the word display for the destination, next stop, and waiting for a train to pass, is very informative, especially since the English translation is just that, translated, and obvious.

Well, like I said: I TOLD YOU!

Remember my last email said that Murphy has moved in, well, you guessed it. The Flexliner died, in Orange, not even an Amtrak stop!

Putting the pieces together afterword, and evesdropping on a nearby walkie talkie, here is how I saw it.

About a mile short of Orange the first of the two trains (that were linked together) developed a problem. We pulled into Orange and stopped, at which time the engine in the front train (where I am) quits. OK. In the next few minutes it is started again and the load is switched in, and the engine promptly dies again. This goes on for a few times and then comes the announcement. Computer problem, to which I replied, sure blame the computer! I was invited to leave. Later I also offered my normal computer fix, CTRL-ALT-DELETE. That was also not taken too seriously. You Mac folks....well, forget it!

A few announcements later, everyone is asked to move to the rear train. Having done this, the two trains are seperated, afterall, isn't that what the Flexline is all about? Great, now we will backup past the switch so we can leave the dead train on track 2 and we will go around it on track 1 and proceed to LA. Back, back, back, stop, forward, forward, stop even with the dead train. We are going to leave one crew member and a telephone here and move on. NOT! The dispatcher said NO WAY! You have to push the dead one off of #2 completely into a siding. Crew wants to pull the dead one, which means that it now has to go forward beyond the switch to backup and pull it off. NOT! Again the dispatcher nix's the idea.

So, after 10 minutes of both trains passangers in only the one train, we backup again, to where we were before, behind the dead train. By now the 579 was not too far behind us going north, like we should be. So, everybody off the train! Once everyone was off, the good Flexliner train pushed the dead one off into the distance. 579 came along and stopped at Orange and was kind enough to pick us all up. And believe me we were all very pleased they did as being stopped for 2 hours in Organge on a very hot day is not all that exciting.

I ended up getting off in Fullerton, 2 hours later than planned which would have given me about 15 minutes for the next southbound train, only problem is, the equipment for the next southbound was stuck back between Anaheim and Orange. Well the makeup train for the 578 southbound was only 30 minutes late to schedule, so I returned to SD on a regular consist.

A number of people did what I did at Fullerton and returning. Everyone took the whole thing in stride. My only disappointment was from the standpoint of Amtrack offering some sort of compensation. One gal on the Flexliner had a 3:20PM flight out of LAX. Since we pulled into Fullerton at 2:50PM, I don't think she made it. Oh well, I guess she won't be at the David Letterman show tonight!

SO, I certainly hope that Murphy has found a new home, sorry Jack, I just have to get rid of him!!

In talking to a gentleman on the Flexliner who is or is not connected to Amtrak Quality Innovation (I'm not sure) it seems that the front train had an interlock problem and that is why it originally shut down. I don't know more, but on the return trip the entire Flexliner consist was AT the Orange station one more time. Of course we were passing and did not see what was going to happen.

It was a different Monday for me, I hope you all are envious of me and my exciting day. Of course, as I told the Conductor, "If I had asked you guys to do a seperation of the trains for me, you would have told me to get lost. How can I complain?" Yes I did get to see the seperation. Very smooth and totally automated. Once the units are ready, the button is pushed and the trains, automatically, drive away from each other about a foot and stop. Now I want to see this while the trains are moving, as the brochure says!!

IMPLEMENTING TEAM PREPARING FOR BNSF OPERATIONS ON UP/SP
Aug01---An implementing team headed by Dave Clifton, BNSF assistant vice president, Operations, is now working full-time to prepare for operation over trackage rights and purchases BNSF received as a condition of the merger between Union Pacific and Southern Pacific.

Representatives from the following departments will be devoted exclusively to ensuring a smooth implementation of BNSF operations on the 4,000 miles of additional routes: marketing business units, Operations, Transportation, Labor Relations, Joint Facilities, Engineering, Crew Management, Customer Service and Support, Information System Services and Interline. Initial haulage operations will begin as soon as UP and SP merge, which is anticipated as early as Sept. 12. Operations on all line segments covered by trackage rights or purchases will be fully implemented after the first of the year.

IC/BNSF MARKETING AGREEMENT
July31--- Illinois Central Railroad has signed a marketing agreement with Burlington Northern Santa Fe for the transport of intermodal units between Memphis and Mobile, beginning August 26. Intermodal units to and from Mobile will be routed directly through Memphis, where the units will be interchanged between the carriers. The traffic will use the Illinois Central's intermodal facility in Mobile.

WORK/REST INITIATIVES
Jul31---More than half of BNSF train, yard and engine employees are in unassigned pool service. Because employees in such service have the least predictable work/rest cycles, the issue of fatigue among members of this group is of great concern. The issue is being addressed through a wide variety of current practices, demonstration projects, proposals to labor organizations, and future plans.

BNSF SELLS 120-MILE NEBRASKA LINE
July24--- Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF) today announced it has sold the O'Neill Line, a 120-mile stretch of track in northeastern Nebraska, to the Nebraska Northeastern Railway Company. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The line, which extends from west of Bing, Neb., to O'Neill, Neb., was offered for sale last March as part of BNSF's ongoing asset evaluation program. BNSF is considering the sale of approximately 4,000 miles of light-density lines over the coming years as part of this program.

Nebraska Northeastern Railway, which has already begun operating over this line, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNW Corporation, headquartered in Dallas, Texas. TNW also owns the Texas North Western Railway Company and the Texas, Gonzalez & Northern Railway Company. The Texas North Western Railway Company operates a former Rock Island line from Etter Jct. to Morse, Texas, and the Texas Gonzalez & Northern operates a former Southern Pacific line from Harwood to Gonzalez, Texas.

As part of the agreement, Nebraska Northeastern now serves the customers on the O'Neill Line between Milepost 4.0 west of Bing and Milepost 124.4 at O'Neill. The company also operates overhead freight rail service over BNSF lines between Bing and BNSF's 18th Street Yard in Sioux City, Iowa, for the purpose of interchanging traffic with BNSF. BNSF continues to handle marketing functions.

MACHINE OPERATOR FATALLY INJURED
Jul23---Machine Operator Alan Jarvi was fatally injured yesterday during a tie-replacement project near Willmar, Minn., when he was struck by a locomotive on a light power consist. Jarvi, 43, had almost 19 years of service with the company.

Jarvi was painting ties to identify them for replacement when he was struck by the westbound locomotive traveling on the southernmost main track. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident," says Don McInnes, senior vice president and chief operating officer. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of Mr. Jarvi."

NEW BNSF TIMETABLE
Jul29---The new BNSF employees timetable will become effective at 0001 Thurday August 1, 1996. The format is the same as has been used for the previous binder style BN timetables. The pages could easily be mistaken for pages from a BN timetable. One nice addition, however, is a schematic track diagram along the edge of the station listing, similar to what UP has used for years.

BNSF'S BRAND NEW C44-9W'S
July22---My friend from Chicago called me early this morning. He was driving past Cicero (Clyde Diesel Shop on the BN), and he saw three of BNSF's brand new C44-9W's...

The scheme, according to him, is closer to the original GN paint job. The green is still dark NP green, orange is GN orange (he can't remember about the trucks, though), but the separation stripes are YELLOW now (a la GN), though "fat" like the single red-stripe version they were experimenting with.

Woo-hoo! At least THAT sounds somewhat tasteful.... if only they could paint the silver trucks black, we'd be all set!

D&RGW

SUBJECT: ROSTERS REDUX
I found another Web site people may not be aware of that may be another example of how to organize roster information ... it's a D&RGW (and related railroads) site with individual locomotive histories, including references to archival stuff like the Otto C. Perry photo collection in Denver. Amazing.

There's a staggering amount of info there.

GENERAL ELECTRIC

GE ERIE, PA SIGHTINGS
A quick trip by GE today revealed the following:
-apparent test sets consisting of.....
CSXT-228,test car,GE-609,GE-706,GECX-5000,GE-001,UP-7000
GE-6000,with unidentified CSXT and BNSF units
-also noted sitting around.....
UP-7007/7008/7009, CSXT-230, GE-1949 (44-ton)
BNSF-961/962/963/968/971/972/978, BN-5498

The BNSF C44-9W's.....
These are probably the same as ATSF 600's, whereby the headlight is in the nose (not the dreaded BN high position), number boards high (where they belong), and of course in the quasi-GN paint scheme. Now the paint looks a little different than I expected, the orange band on the hood appears to be wider than on test unit #9297. Also the pinstriping on all units is yellow, as is the frame stripe. The top green area wraps around the nose in a straight line, about headlight level, creating a "green triangle" at the peak of the nose. The bottom is in the "V" format as on #9297. The cab numbers were a bit of a surprise also - they are not ATSF style, but a small, sans serif type a lot like GN. They are not as small as the old "KCS microscopic numbers", but they are pretty small. Considering solely the merits of the scheme (and not whining about losing Warbonnets, etc.), it looks good, IMHO. :) This message has been cross-posted to more than one list due to the interest these units have generated among us. So shoot me.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC

ROSEVILLE REPORTS
Jul26--- Two mildly interesting occurrences at Roseville yard's east end this morning (7/26/96):
  1. Parked and MUd together on the "ready" track parallel to Atlantic Street were...
    • CNW SD-45 #6889
    • SSW SD-40-T #8324
    • D&RGW SD-40T #5508
    • SP SD-70M #9820

Interestly, these represent the last four road acquisitions by UP...

  2. SD-9 #4371 and SD-7 #1524 are MUd together as yard goats. When #4371 passed close, right above the number on the side of the cab is "NWP." I haven't seen a real NWP unit for nearly 30 years (saw some NWP F-units in 1967 at Willits), so either the repainting schedule is seriously behind, or this puppy came out of storage somewhere to butt cars around. I don't recall having seen this particular unit in Roseville before...

I plan to inventory the SD-7 and SD-9 situation after doing some yardwork today (it's going to be 100+, too hot in the afternoon to do anything else!), since some new numbers and units are showing up on the tracks adjacent to the locomotive facility.

Last but not least, two Jordan Spreaders are parked parallel to Atlantic Street in Roseville, and they look pretty good. No ideas why or where they are heading--they've been there nearly 3 weeks.

Some new SP gons were being banged around the yard this morning, all bearing Thrall Car building dates of 6/96. All are black (a new scheme?), and all have a black and white SP sunset logo, instead of the red/yellow logo. This is the first black paint scheme I know of since the black widows and rotary snowplows.

July16---Last night (7/15/96) was a nice, warm Sacramento Valley night, perfect for killing time at the Roseville Yards. Nothing too much out of the ordinary except that SD-7 #1505 and SD-9 #4409 are still alive and kicking around cars in the east end of the yard. Helping out is SD-40-2 #7419. I noted a new speed recorder hub on the middle axle of #1505, fireman's side, so maybe the SP/UP or SOUP (Hey! A new acronym!) will keep that old beast around a few months longer.

There has been a string of 80' flatcars (CRLE reporting marks) sitting in the yard for about a week with no movement noted. Last night (7/15) a yard crew (orange hardhats) with oxyacetyline torches burned off all the cabling holding down prestressed concrete pieces piled on the cars, leaving the entire string of cars with unsecured loads. There is no indication whether the concrete pieces are destined for use in the yard, or whether the dunnage was allowing the loads to shift and SP is just resecuring the loads.

A westbound drag from Oregon came through with some GE four axle power and one NS dash 9. I had to leave before it hove into view to get the numbers, but that's the first NS unit I've ever seen in the yard.

On another westbound drag that came over the Hill were some good ol' boys riding the end cavities of grain cars. No sooner did they hit the ballast when the train stopped than SP's bull was on them with a warm Roseville welcome. Amtrak seems much more comfortable, actually...

For anyone's information who's interested, I e-mailed UP's public relations department several months ago and asked if there was any consideration being given to resurrecting a variation on the Sunset colors for the SOUP merger. A very polite (but succinct) reply came back stating that no plans were being discussed to change the UP's corporate color scheme. Too bad, because that Sunset scheme incorporates colors on both roads (and the D&RGW, too), and is very visible; it doesn't blend in with the dusty foothill brush like yellow does. Heck, if BNSF can come up with an old/new scheme, so can SOUP.

That's all from this vantage point. I'm looking forward to the next TW, too.

TEX-MEX

TEXAS MEXICAN RAILWAY THINKS IT CAN WIN IN MERGER
Because of the UP/SP merger tiny Tex Mex has a chance to grow and become a key competitor in ferrying goods to the Mexican market.

Tex Mex got rights to run trains along 420 miles of Union Pacific's track from Corpus right through Houston and ending in Beaumont. KCS bought 49% of Tex Mex a year ago. Transportacion Maritima Mexicana, a Mexican transporation company owns the other 51% of Tex Mex. The two companies have joined together to bid on a section of Mexico's public railway system, which is scheduled to be auctioned off to private bidders early next year. They have their eyes set on tracks that start in Nuevo Laredo.

The company must still iron out some critical details with the Surface Transporation Board, mostly involving Houston service. Right now, the railroad can only drop goods off in Houston.

UNION PACIFIC

THE ORIGIN OF THE COTTON BELT LOGO
Jul26---Steve--several weeks ago I posed a question as to the origin of the Cotton Belt logo--the irregular polygon. You suggested looking in Strapac's book, which I've ordered at our local library.

On a whim the question was posed to John Bromley, UP's public relations director, and an interesting reply came back:
* * * * * *
From: John E. Bromley

As you might guess we had no background on this so I went to my counterpart at SP who asked John Signor, a noted SP historian.

John advises the first Cotton Belt logo in the 1880s was a cotton bale with the name spelled out on one side. The company soon decided it implied the railroad served only cotton shippers so the logo was changed to the emblem used since -- what you described as an irregularly-shaped object. We have no information on whether or not it was to represent anything. I suspect it simply was a design.

* * * * * * *

It's refreshing to know that corporate America is still staffed by real, live humans.

TEXAS TRAINS
July16---Here is some lineups over the last 4 or 5 weeks. It may be a little late on some but the power is interesting on some of them.

It looks like the BNSF is taking advantage of some trackage rights on SP as they have been running grain trains on the SP through Hearne and Bryan lately. The trains seem to be running about 3 times a week generally with Santa Fe power.
