Issue No. 14
Dec. 15, 1995
On Dec 13th Amtrak reported, despite the prediction that it was going to loose $240 million in 1995, it will actually finish the year with cash in hand. Amtrak credits it's restructuring and its efforts to attract more customers. Reportedly their plan for 1996 will improve their position even more...According to a report, William Marks, who lives near Hyder Arizona was questioned on a polygraph in connection with the Arizona Amtrak derailment that killed one person and injured 78. He was also asked about his gun collection and his local contacts. The agents, "stared into my eyes the whole time," Marks reportedly said. "I was cleared," Marks reportedly said. The FBI asked Sherri Smith, a 23-year-old video store manager if she knew anybody who was racist, drives a four-wheel-drive vehicle and wears a cowbody hat, "that just about sums up everybody," Smith reportedly said...Reportedly Amtrak has added a Thruway bus connection to Solvang from the San Diegans. There are three daily roundtrips of the bus from Santa Barbara to Solvang, the story said...A recent report says that in Feb. 96 the state of Florida will be awarding a $2 billion contract for the construction operation of a 320 mile high speed passenger train linking Orlando, Tampa and Miami. There were five bidders for the contract. Some planned conventional and TGV-like service and some proposed a system using magnetic levitation....The House voted 406-4 for H.R. 1788, the house Amtrak authorization bill on Nov. 30, according to a Dec 8th PR Newswire report. Amtrak also has apparently decided to keep the Pioneer, servicing Wyoming, southern Idaho and eastern Oregon. Plans are still proceeding for drastic service cuts, according to the report....The seven year plan assumes no federal government support for Amtrak in FY 2002. Reportedly Amtrak finished $63 million in the red in 1994.

On Saturday evening 12/09, I was driving up I-880 by Oakland, and noticed a westbound heading torward the yards.. So, as any good railfan would do, I drove down to Jack London Square and waited.. There in front of the new Amtrak station was the northbound Coast Starlight, with 800/801/CDOT 2006! for power.. The 2006 was pretty interesting, as the "nose-cone" of the locomotive was in primer (probably from repairs in LA/Redondo?), and I surmise that it was on its journey north to CEECO in Portland for a coat of Blue over its new fiberglass nose. About three minutes later after I parked my car, the westbound appeared with SP 9819/9804 FB, looking rather clean. but as soon as the 9819 glided up alongside the lounge cafe, #14 accelerated out of the station with copious chugging from the two GE "missiles" on the point.. Two missiles and a rocketship! what next? Incidentally, SP SD70M 9819 still looked fairly clean - not bad for a not-so-new-anymore SP locomotive..

The BNSF, along with the Supermall of the Great Northwest has filed an objection to the growth plan of the city of Auburn, Washington, according to a November report. The railroad claims it is being prohibited from beefing up it's decades-old rail yard in Auburn at a time when the area is experiencing growth. The BNSF reportedly wants to build an intermodal facility there. The city is apparently concerned about traffic, noise and light from the proposed around-the-clock facility. There is also the reported issue of animosity on the part of the city toward the railroad after the BN closed much of it's Auburn facilities in the early 70's....It has been reported that BN chairman Gerald Grinstien will be retiring at the end of the year. A sucessor is supposed to be appointed on Dec. 14th.

I just saw BNSF 9647 sandwiched between 2 SD70MAC's on a 3 unit lashup on a northbound coal train. The train just exited the Joint Line here in Denver. The loaction of the sighting was next to the new Elitch Gardens amusement park in the Platte Valley.. Looks like the experimental paint scheme is in revenue service.

(Dec8), I like Track Warrants very much, and hope you guys keep going with more issues. I do have a few thoughts on the Cal Northern, as I went the day after Thanksgiving to railfan the Petaluma Turn. I showed up at Napa Jct. at 09:00 expecting to see the Petaluma Turn there. However one of thier engineers told me that the Petaluma Turn now comes from Petaluma, and no longer orignates in Napa Jct. The same thing was also happening to the Suisun-Busch Local. I don't know if this is a permanent change or not, but I'd appreciate an update from local readers so I wont have to drive around looking for the local. The on duty times of 09:00 and 11:00 for the Petaluma Turn, and Suisun-Busch Local still hold true.
Thanks again.

I found you Track Warrants without any trouble. I read Issue No. 13 and the article dealing with the Cal Northern and the sugar beet train. Today, 12/08/95, I took your article and enjoyed some absolutely great railfaning. I caught the train at WYO just north of Orland. I followed it to Holly Sugar at Hamilton City and back to WYO. Great article and thanks.

Agent GOLDEN EAR has been trying to get the 800 MHz frequency used by CALTRAIN-Joint Powers Board M of W and Police ever since he first spotted 800MHz antennae on JPB M of W trucks and equipment in the late summer of 1992. Uniden transceivers were spotted inside the M of W vehicles, alwaysseemingly on "channel 11" according to the digital readout. Finally, on the night of December 7, 1995, CALTRAIN's secret was broken whenAgent GOLDEN EAR, armed with Realistic PRO-43 and Optoelectronics 1300H/Afrequency counter, staked out M of W crews preparing to do tie replacementwork on the CALTRAIN tracks in Mountain View, CA. Voices were heard on theexternal speaker on one JPB truck and they were not being transmitted on therailroad band. Flinging the frequency counter aside, Agent GOLDEN EAR putthe PRO-43 in search mode and scanned the range 851.0 to 870.0 MHz. Thetalking continued on the speaker and the PRO-43 stopped on 864.1375!!!!!! Itwas a conventional repeater!!
EUREKA!!
Further monitoring has disclosed Amtrak police using it for chit-chat during the evening. Even though the frequency range is in the TRUNKED license area,it is used conventionally it seems, as when the repeater carrier drops out,the same stations come back immediately to continue their conversation.
(Dec 3, SOUTHERN ALBERTA) The new 9500s have been showing up regularly in this area since late September although not usually on the Taber sub. Most of them are designated for service in BC hauling coal so they come down the Aldersyde sub from Calgary and immediately go west via the Crowsnest. However, the odd one shows up on the "Coutts" from Lethbridge to points in the US via Shelby Montana and BN.(for instance, 9554 and two SD40s took the Coutts-110 cars- down yesterday, Dec 2/95). There is no doubt about the superior power and efficiency of these AC4400s. That train would have had 4 SD40s in the pre-AC days. Lethbridge is a terminal point and crew change point and the junction of 4 subdivisons(Aldersyde, Crosnest, Taber and Stirling/Coutts) so we see quite a variety of manifests through here..grain, coal, sulphur, LP gas, methanol, etc.
Reports have it that CP is experiencing trouble with using the AC4400s in Locotrol mode. Apparently the idea is to use a 9500 on the point and another 9500 in Locotrol in mid-train on unit coal trains. Apparently the lead unit is transmitting some RF hash from the AC motors or control system and interfering with the locotrol system in the slave. Reports are that there are presently several AC4400s on the deadline in Calgary waiting for this problem to be solved. Boy, at $250 million per unit I think GE better get busy on this one!
For anyone is visiting this area, the scanner frequencies are 161.475(ch 1) and 161.115(ch 4). Both are active but most traffic is on ch 1. This is an MBS area so you hear lots of activity..clearances, track detectors etc.

I saw one of the MK SD45 rebuilds the other day, CP 5498, and it was smoking almost as bad as an Alco, and didn't sound very good either (didn't have that nice constant whine most SD40's have, more like a loud interrupted hum)

(PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 4) On Wednesday, December 6, at 1 p.m.,Conrail (NYSE: CRR) said it will roll out the first of 28 new 5,000horsepower locomotives, bearing the new Conrail markings, in a ceremony at its Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The units are being built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in London, Ontario. These new SD80MAC locomotives are the most powerful in rail freight servicein America today; two of these units will replace as many as four existing locomotives.
These new locomotives will greatly enhance Conrail's ability to operate its locomotive fleet more efficiently because, in addition to the higherhorsepower, the units take advantage of extended maintenance cycles. Other qualities of the SD80MACs include greatly improved track adhesion, fuel economy and control of exhaust emissions.
Because of the dramatic increase in locomotive pulling power, the AC, or alternating-current, technology is the largest locomotive productivity improvement since railroads changed from steam to diesel engines in the 1950s. The new locomotives transfer more power from their engines to the traction motors -- the devices that actually turn the wheels -- than the traditional DC, or direct-current, technology, which utilizes a complicatedsystem of large "commutators" and brushes. In the AC system, the commutators and brushes have been replaced by micro-processor controlled semi-conductors.

SP Construction company is planting fiber optic cable along the Santa Feline between El Paso and Albuquerque right now. The train is all SP equipment, the cable plow is a home-brew unit based on a Jordan chassis. There are several big mill gons (small markings: SP telecom) with rolls of fiber, and a bay window caboose.
The engines are GP-7 units, (they have GP-7 stenciled on the frame at the front) of interesting character. 501 and 503 are the engines, and both have names stenciled on the cabside. I'll be getting pictures during the next few days, since they aregoing to be tied up on the Mesilla Park siding just south of Las Cruces until Monday.
These are both low nose, both have winterization hatches, but one has"torpedo" air tanks, the other is conventional. Paint is mostly a medium grey, silver trucks. The herald is a lozenge with "SP construction service"and a stylized fiber cable winding through the logo. 503, the torpedo boat also has an extension on the long hood end, squared off like some of the modifications I've seen pictures of for HEP. Crew was friendly, all SP employees.

According to a recent report the Alameda Corridor promises to create 700,000 jobs and to generate billions of dollars of business development. He says the development is a 20-mile enlargement of rr tracks and truck lanes to speed frieght from LA and Long Beach ports to the SP, UP and BNSF rr yards. Construction has just begun. The $1.8 billion corridor project is till $700 million shy in financing. The Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority is reportedly pushing hard in Washington for the needed money. Construction could begin next year that would double the rr tracks that serve the area including the digging of a trench 32 feet deep from the Gardena Freeway to 25th Street to allow the passage of 100 trains a day and thousands of trucks. Projections are that port traffic would triple....Another report says, William Marks, who lives near Hyder Arizona was questioned on a polygraph in connection with the Arizona Amtrak derailment that killed one person and injured 78. He reportedly was also asked about his gun collection and his local contacts. The agents, "stared into my eyes the whole time," Marks reportedly said. "I was cleared," Marks reportedly said. The FBI asked Sherri Smith, a 23-year-old video store manager if she knew anybody who was racist, drives a four-wheel-drive vehicle and wears a cowbody hat, "that just about sums up everybody," Smith reportedly said

Spotted a newly-painted i.e. _glistening_ hopper at the Terror Creek loadout, SP (ex-D&RGW) North Fork branch on Friday, w/white D&RGW above number and reporting marks (neither of which I could see), but with prominent Southern Pacific in speed lettering on right side of car. I see many coal trains but this is the first such hopper I've seen. I assume it is an old D&RGW repaint, but at least different!

OAKLAND: Kodachrome geep3846 forgotten at West Oakland Diesel shop back in July when SP closed the facility has been moved to west end of the house, (Dec11). Not sure if Amtrak or SP moved it. Amtrak still uses the diesel facilty to fuel their units only. No SP allowed.. A mud Missle was parked in front of the 3846, The unit has been solf to a prvate party and is being prepared for movement. Not known who bought it.

According to a recent story an initial investigation revealed no problems with the brake and signal systems of the two trains that collided in Wyoming killing an engineer, setting off a huge fire and destroying several locomotives... It was reported in November that Drew Lewis showed up at the Nov. 9th meeting of House Rules Committee in Washington. According to the report, Lewis was there to support legislation that would shield the proposed UP-SP merger from anti-trust considerations and appoint the Transportation Department, rather than the Justice Department to review the proposed merger. The report said that Lewis said his support for the legislation was not related to the merger application...According to another source, Lewis and Phillip Anshutz reportedly are major Republican fundraisers and Dole supporters. An early December report says the UP wants to expand its Salt Lake City rail yard at a cost of $7.7 million if the merger goes through The story also says the merged railroad will result in the loss of about 170 Utah jobs.

I have some additional information on that engineer killed in Laramie...
His name was Dave Gibson, and he was killed when he jumped from the engineand an APC container fell on him. I received this information from SteveLee of the UP steam program, and Dave was a friend of his. He worked underSteve when Steve was a Road Foreman of Engines many years ago.

I was in Torrington again over the weekend, and happened to take another side trip to South Morrill, Nebraska. Anyway, I spotted what I think are 3 new UP AC locomotives, #6836, #6839 and #6844. 6839 was by itself, but the other 2 were connected to a westbound coal empty, with the UP "Dyno" test car directly behind the locomotives. Apparently, they are working the Powder River coal runs. There was a large amount of activity at South Morrill, several trains were backed up waiting for crews apparently.
I read another blurb in the "Torrington Telegram" which said that BN was operating a "Santa Claus Special" that would be in town on Dec. 16th from 12 to 2 P.M. that day. Does anyone know what the consist of this train will be?
There was another article which talked about the safety of the U.S. 85 crossing, specifically obstructed view of the tracks. There was some concern that school busses could be at risk. This was on the BN main through town, and the article said that 40 trains a day pass through this crossing. Pretty busy for a single track main line.
Anyway, that is the news from Torrington, Jim Burrill via bit.listserv.railroad

Some motive power info from UP [should be on the property by January]:
WASHINGTON (December 1, 1995) -- The nation's major freight railroads and the United Transportation Union (UTU), the country's largest rail union, announced today they had reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement. Announcement of the accord was made by Charles L. Little, the UTU's international president, and Robert Allen, chairman of the NationalCarriers' Conference Committee (NCCC), the bargaining agent for the railroads.
The agreement covers trainmen, conductors, engine service personnel, and yardmasters. It is the first to be reached by the carriers with any of the 13 standard rail unions during the current round of bargaining, which began in November 1994.

Saw that (mentioned in Issue 13) also, but northbound at a modest speed in Fresno at West Ave. Aside: great place to work for train nuts (next to the tracks...) but I have an inside office (grump). Wonder, though, if the Amtrak engine was dead then what powered the train (hotel power)? I doubt that BNSF engines still (if they ever did) carry head-end power connections. Must have been interesting inside.

PS: the standing joke around here is that we'd never notice anearthquake -- we get 1 or 2 an hour anyway. Would just wonder whichfreight went by and why they didn't blow for thecrossing. The coil-steel train (couple times a week NB) really makes things rock.
Rather old news now but several of us made a trip to the Powder River Valley in Wyoming Sept.1st weekend...had a fabulous time at Reno Junction shooting the coal operations! For people who figure that one train an hour is real busy, to see as many as 7 trains visible at one time is a little hard on the heart.BN operations were almost all 70MACs but lots of UP/CNW -9s, -8s, AC4400s etc. An obliging BN hoghead gave us a cab tour of a 70MAC (9419 to be exact) while they were waiting for clearance with 110 loads of coal. He showed us the capabilities of the MAC for ultra-slow speed operation through coal loading shutes. He keyed in a speed of 0.01 mph(that's right!..1/100 mph) and then notched her up. Everybody outside thought the train was taking off..I guess it was moving but not so you would notice. Very impressive.
