Billy Goats: Mt. Hamilton (Lower, Upper down Backside), Calaveras
This ride is right out of the pages of Bay Area Bike Rides (see below!) We'll meet in Milpitas at Calaveras Blvd. at Calaveras Ct., climb the mountain, go down the backside, go up Mines Rd., return via Livermore, Pleasanton and Calaveras Reservoir. This will be an "M" paced ride and nobody who can maintain an "M" pace will be left behind. One obvious short option is to climb Mt. Hamilton (Upper and Lower) and return down the hill.
The rollers behind Mt. Hamilton are like some of the "3-4" goats closer to home and they come one after another. There will be no sag, water can be sparse so carry lots of it, it could be very hot and you will need to be prepared to support yourself on this long day's ride! Still sound like fun?
Pace M = Moderate: 14-16 mph. Regroups approx. every 45 min. [Source]
Grade 5 = Steep hills: Hicks, Sierra, Metcalf, Montebello, Felton Empire, Zayante, Alpine, Henry Coe, Mt.Hamilton
Spinoffs and options
Faster or slower riders wanting to start at another time, or to do their own faster or slower rides are invited to lead their own spin-off rides. Such rides will not be listed on my ride sheet and riders taking off the front will be scratched off my sheet. I will try to bring extra ride sheets!
Be warned: it will be a long day with a lot of climbing so riding slower than an "M" pace is not a good idea! You may not have enough daylight.
