Violet Sock Pattern
The second sock pal sock is begun and
I have also begun some Embossed Leaves socks in this Curious
Yarns yarn (color: sprung) that Emma
sent me in the first favorite color swap last summer. I have loved this yarn
from the minute I saw it and it was time to knit with
it.
Here's the pattern for the
Violet socks that I'm knitting for my sock pal. I'll start with the
disclaimers. --I have knit
these twice but no one else has knitted them from my instructions. Therefore,
view this as a guideline rather than a pattern. There may well be mistakes or
things that are unclear. Please tell me if there are and I'll fix
them.--The instructions
probably aren't complete enough for you to knit them if it's your first pair of
socks. They assume that you have the general sock
idea.--You can do anything
you want with this pattern except publish it and call it
yours.All righty,
then.Gauge: about 8
stitches to the inch--I'm not particularly fussy about gauge for socks, they're
stretchy. I used Cabin Cove Merino on the first pair and Cherry
Tree Hill Supersock on the second. The Cherry Tree Hill was a little finer--it
affected row gauge more than stitch gauge. One skein of each was
plenty.Needles: Size 2, 32 inch
Knit Picks circular. You might want a size 1. The first pair (Cabin Cove) was
for someone with a pretty short foot, the second was for a more average
foot.I use magic loop, if
you like double points adjust your stitches
accordingly.You could
easily do a provisional cast on and knit down the live stitches for the picot
edge if you wanted.The toe
and square heel are taken from Nancy Bush's instructions in Knitting on the
Road.Cast on 60

patternYou need to decide
how far around the foot you want the violet pattern to go. I carried it around
to the side so that it continued into the first three stitches of the bottom of
the foot but this is a little fiddly so you could eliminate the violets on the
very side (rows
7-12).Decrease in this way
until thirty stitches remain on needle. Continue foot until 3 repeats of violet
pattern are completed or until foot is about 2" less than finished

every other row until 16 stitches remain on each needle then decrease every row
until 4 stitches remain on each needle. Break yarn, thread through
loops.Fold down the top of
the hem to form a picot edge and stitch down. Weave in all ends.
