Violet Sock Pattern

The second sock pal sock is begun and I have also begun some Embossed Leaves socks in this Curious Yarns yarn (color: sprung) that Emma sent me in the first favorite color swap last summer. I have loved this yarn from the minute I saw it and it was time to knit with it.

Here's the pattern for the Violet socks that I'm knitting for my sock pal. I'll start with the disclaimers.

--I have knit these twice but no one else has knitted them from my instructions. Therefore, view this as a guideline rather than a pattern. There may well be mistakes or things that are unclear. Please tell me if there are and I'll fix them.

--The instructions probably aren't complete enough for you to knit them if it's your first pair of socks. They assume that you have the general sock idea.

--You can do anything you want with this pattern except publish it and call it yours.

All righty, then.

Gauge: about 8 stitches to the inch--I'm not particularly fussy about gauge for socks, they're stretchy. I used Cabin Cove Merino on the first pair and Cherry Tree Hill Supersock on the second. The Cherry Tree Hill was a little finer--it affected row gauge more than stitch gauge. One skein of each was plenty.
Needles: Size 2, 32 inch Knit Picks circular. You might want a size 1. The first pair (Cabin Cove) was for someone with a pretty short foot, the second was for a more average foot.

I use magic loop, if you like double points adjust your stitches accordingly.

You could easily do a provisional cast on and knit down the live stitches for the picot edge if you wanted.

The toe and square heel are taken from Nancy Bush's instructions in Knitting on the Road.

Cast on 60 stitches.
Join in a round.
Knit 7 rows.
Next row: *K2tog, YO* Repeat till end of row.
Knit 10 rows.

Begin violet pattern (12 row repeat)

Row 1: K5, *YO, slip 1, K1, PSSO, K8* repeat from * to * until 3 stitches remain, end K3.
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: K3, *K2tog, YO, K1, YO, slip1, K1, PSSO, K5* repeat from * to* until 2 stitches remain, end K2.
Row 4: Knit
Row 5: Repeat row 1
Row 6: Knit
Row 7: *YO, slip 1, K1, PSSO, K8* repeat from * to * until end of row.
Row 8: Knit
Row 9: K1, YO, slip 1, K1, PSSO, K5, *K2tog, YO, K1, YO, slip 1, K1, PSSO, K5* repeat from * to * until 2 stitches remain, end K2 tog, YO
Row 10: Knit
Row 11: Repeat row 7
Row 12: Knit

Work three more repeats of violet pattern or until leg is the length you want (I worked four repeats total on the Cabin Cove sock and six on the Cherry Tree Hill).

Work Heel Flap:

Worked across thirty stitches on needle one.
Row 1 ( and all right side rows): *Slip 1, K1*, repeat to end of row.
Row 2: ( and all wrong side rows): Slip 1, P29
Repeat until you have worked 28 rows (14 chain stitches)

Turn Heel:

Row 1: K19, K2tog through back loop
Turn work
Row 2: Slip 1, P8, P2tog
Turn work
Row 3: Slip 1, K8, K2tog through back loop
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have used all of the stitches. You should have ten stitches on the needle.

Pick up and knit 14 chain stitches on right side of flap.
Knit across instep continuing violet pattern.
Pick up and knit 14 chain stitches on left side of flap.
Knit across bottom of foot.

Needle one should hold 14 stitches from left side of flap, 10 stitches from heel and 14 stitches from right side of flap (38 total). Needle 2 should hold 30 instep stitches.

Shape gusset:
Row 1:
Needle 1:K1, K2 tog through back loop, K until 3 stitches remain, K2 tog, K1.
Needle 2: Work violet pattern.

Row 2:
Needle 1: Knit
Needle 2: Work violet pattern

You need to decide how far around the foot you want the violet pattern to go. I carried it around to the side so that it continued into the first three stitches of the bottom of the foot but this is a little fiddly so you could eliminate the violets on the very side (rows 7-12).

Decrease in this way until thirty stitches remain on needle. Continue foot until 3 repeats of violet pattern are completed or until foot is about 2" less than finished sock.

Stop working violet pattern.

Shape toe

K1, K2 tog through back loop, K to last 3 stitches, K2 tog, K1
Repeat on needle 2
Knit one row even.

Decrease in this way every other row until 16 stitches remain on each needle then decrease every row until 4 stitches remain on each needle. Break yarn, thread through loops.

Fold down the top of the hem to form a picot edge and stitch down. Weave in all ends.
