This is the phrase that keeps reverberating in my head. I mean, from start to finish, everything about this amazing wedding was utterly radiant. And, indeed, every detail was beautiful (event and floral design by Debi Lily at A Perfect Event) and the weather was perfect and they are insanely gorgeous. But what sticks out in my mind more is the radiance of Mychelle and Chris, themselves -- beaming with a kind of warmth and kindness towards everyone there to celebrate with them. And being there with them and getting to know their family and friends was an incredible privilege. I also have to give big thank you to Mary Kay Williams (Megan's mom) for the referral! The festivities started the night before with a rehearsal dinner, hosted by Chris's parents and inspired by the bounty of the Italian countryside. Wednesday saying that the ceremony would be on
Friday.
Yup, Jonas is being sworn in as a US Citizen today! And it was a truly wonderful day. Jonas' dear friend Heather joined me at the ceremony and we cheered him and all the others on. And afterwards we went to Custom House for a celebratory drink. (We all also got burgers because we figured, what could be more American than that?) My favorite part of the ceremony was when they said that between 193 new citizens, 49 countries were represented. And then they called out the names of the countries one by one and each person stood as their country of origin was called. Hearing the diversity of countries was one of those moments that reminds you that we are, indeed, a nation of immigrants. Everyone is from somewhere else. Chills ran through me as I watched 49 different countries come together into one nation. There were also a whole bunch of television crews there because amongst the 193 people becoming citizens was an 86 year old man in hospice care. He led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance at the end -- a perfect way to end the ceremony. There were so many photos I wanted to post that I decided to try my hand at a web based slideshow. Corey's wedding. Labor Day Weekend, Perfect weather, Gorgeous bride,
Picturesque setting, and the nicest couple you could ever

But what sticks out in my mind most about this wedding was how incredibly meaningful the ceremony was. Sometimes I think that the ceremony gets lost in the beauty of the day -- but not this one. It was just so heartfelt. So personal. It was a two hour interview with a range of questions including civics questions about how our government works. I have been helping him study for the test that included such questions as, "Who said 'Give me liberty or give me death'?" (Patrick Henry). (You can imagine how tickled I was when he told me that was the first question the interviewer asked him on the test portion! Over achiever that he is got 100% on the test!) I am so proud to announce that he has been recommended for citizenship!!! He will find out when his swearing in ceremony is in a few weeks, but in the meantime I would just like to say that moments like this give me a chance reflect on this status that I too often take for granted... Being an American is a complicated thing -- The legacy of a million shining moments and a million shameful failings. It is very easy to look at the acts of Americans and either idealize or scorn what being an American means. But relegating anything to such extremes is often a cop out - an inability to understand nuance and a world where things aren't simply grey, but in fact both black AND white simultaneously. For me, this means that I believe that what it says in the preamble to the Constitution: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America" ...is not a statement of what always *is* but rather a statement of who we aspire to be. And I can embrace the pristine ideal while still acknowledging that the execution is often woefully flawed. We work to be better. And soon, we the people, will get one more amazing man to help us in the journey. I love you, Jonas. And this weekend I got my wish! My client, Karol, decided, for her 50th birthday, to throw a killer party for her twin brother Kevin and herself... and boy did she do it right! ![]() The theme was Parisian: "Un Soir Dans Rouge" ("An Evening in Red") and it was held at the High Museum of Art which has a partnership, fittingly, with the Louvre. ![]() ![]() ![]() The details were exquisite: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Karol and her beau as they entered the party... They are two of the
nicest people and their wedding was just like they are -- relaxed, fun and
beautiful.
Erin's dress was stunning. ![]() And the flowers were a gorgeous summer medley... ![]() I love Erin's beautiful long lashes... ![]() Accentuating her electric blue eyes perfectly... ![]() Erin's mother in law when she saw Erin for the first time... ![]() A few more getting ready shots ![]() ![]() This flower girl was positively cherubic... ![]() Erin and her dad coming down the aisle... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After the ceremony we did some quick photos with the bridal party... ![]() And then I got to play with Erin and Rick who are so crazy in love that it makes photographing them a total joy! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As if you can't tell by now, Erin is a total knockout and if you don't get lost in her blue eyes, you were clearly dropped on your head as a small child. ![]() ![]() So on to the reception -- these two over zealous ushers got so excited about their entrance that they took out an exit sign on arrival! ![]() Love love these first dance shots... ![]() ![]() Because it was such a perfect night, we decided to sneak out for a few minutes in the evening and do a few more photos... ![]() We also had the most amazing full moon and incredible light from the resort so we got these fantastic moonlight shots... ![]() ![]() Normally I would let that last shot of Erin and Rick be the last word, but this groomsman was watching me while I took that photo of Erin and Rick and specially asked if I would take one of him pondering the moon. To that kind of request, how can you say "No"? The weather finally mellowed into a perfect summer evening with an open sky and a beautiful sunset. ![]() ![]() ![]() For the reception, they transformed the country club into a swank urban lounge, removing *every* piece of club furniture and replacing it with sleek cabaret tables , stools, funky rugs, and special lighting. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Gotta love the Hora, especially in those awesome shoes!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And to end the night, Michael and Caitlin partook in Michael's family tradition of lighting sparklers. ![]() Oh what a night. Day Two - The Wedding I should start today's post by saying a few words about the Wege's cottage at Stony Lake. The top portion is an all glass solarium suspended over two bedrocks, each of which is hollowed out to house the cottage bedrooms and boat house. The entire cottage is situated on the tip of a peninsula, so there are views of the Lake from almost every vantage point. It was such a treat to have such an amazing location to photograph the ceremony and cocktail hour. ![]() ![]() ![]() Caitlin's amazing Vera Wang Dress was hanging dramatically in her parents bedroom when I arrived. ![]() ![]() ![]() I love a bundt cake of Yarmulkes... ![]() ![]() Caitlin's adorable niece, Gwyn... ![]() Michael (and Spike) waiting for Caitlin to get ready... ![]() Caitlin's fabulously decadent Christian Louboutin party shoes were To.Die.For... ![]() ![]() A beautiful gift from mom and dad for Caitlin... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I love this moment between the mothers at the Ketubah signing... ![]() I haven't seen this before at a Ketubah signing, but I thought it was one of the loveliest ideas... Right after the Ketubah was signed the rabbi asked each set of parents to go and whisper something in their childs ear -- a blessing or some advice or words of love. ![]() Then he asked the parents to say something privately to their new daughter and son in law... ![]() And then he had Caitlin and Michael whisper something privately to each other... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Chuppah was incredible.... fashioned from bronzed vines and mixed with an explosion of flowers and garlands... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I love these moments at the cocktail hour with Caitlin and her mom and sisters. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() During the cocktail hour, Caitlin and Michael and I stole away for a few minutes and took some photos ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Caitlin looked just amazing and was a dream to photograph. Her presence with the camera is simply effortless. ![]() ![]() Michael is also so much fun to work with, with an infectious smile and such and easy wonderful way about him. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The weather was a bit unpredictable all day, but one thing I tell my clients is that there is no such thing as bad weather and there are fantastic photos to be had in every type of weather. particularly close to my heart because I met Caitlin's whole family a year ago
when Jonas and I went to Canada together for the first time so I
could meet his family and childhood friends. Jonas and Caitlin's sister Jess
have been close friends ever since they were young and Jess invited Jonas and I
to stay at her family's cottage for a few days while we were in town. We had an
amazing time there and I just felt so immediately connected to the whole
wonderful Wege clan -- like I had known them all my life
too!
While we were there, Caitlin's mom, Kathy, mentioned to me that she had a daughter who was getting married and needed a photographer. A month or so later, Caitlin and Michael saw my work too, decided to book me and the rest is history! I ended up meeting Caitlin and Michael for the first time at their engagement shoot in Chicago and I we had a blast shooting around my new neighborhood in Bucktown. They are both so friendly and so warm, I just knew their wedding weekend was going to be a fantastic! ![]() ![]() Day One - Spa Day, Rehearsal Dinner and Welcome Bash The festivities started Saturday morning with a trip to the spa and brunch for Caitlin and her bridesmaids... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Later that afternoon, everyone met up for the rehearsal. The rain made wonderfully romantic backdrop as they practiced walking down the aisle. ![]() The rehearsal dinner was on a tour boat that has the Wege's cottage as one of the highlights of their tour! The Wege clan has, for years watched the tour boat go by their cottage, but this was their first time taking the tour. ![]() ![]() ![]() Michael's best man Dean... ![]() Caitlin's matron of honor, her sister, Jess... ![]() Michael's grandmother... ![]() A last minute surprise passenger -- Caitlin's grandfather! ![]() ![]() ![]() I also loved getting to know Michael's family. I love this shot of his father and sister (who is studying photography so it was really cool to talk shop with her!)... ![]() Everybody wore their favorite baseball gear since the party later was going to be a baseball theme Welcome Bash... ![]() Caitlin's dad, Doc, wearing the only hat that would ever cover up his beloved Detroit Tigers... A Wege/Weiner Wedding hat! ![]() Caitlin, ever the shoe gal, was sporting converse low-tops... ![]() And the kids all had their hats... ![]() After the dinner, Michael's mom told some hilarious stories about Michael... ![]() ![]() And Caitlin's mom, Kathy, made sure that Caitlin didn't feel left out... ![]() ![]() ![]() Michael and Caitlin are baseball fanatics so a baseball themed Welcome Bash for all their guest was just the right way to go. And while the Red Sox are sacrosanct in their world... ![]() ...there a few other folks ready to talk some trash to support their team! ![]() The details of this party were just beautiful. The whole green theme of the wedding was carried through every little detail... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course what ball game is complete without popcorn, cotton candy, beer and hot dogs? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I love this shot of Caitlin's sister Jennifer and her boyfriend... ![]() ![]() ![]() There were several baseball games set up, my favorite of which was a bull pen where people could clock their pitching speed... ![]() ![]() ![]() As the evening set in, the night lights came on, giving the whole party the look of a baseball night game. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Check back tomorrow for Part II -- the Wedding! On the most popular wedding date in wedding history, I was lucky enough to have a a truly awesome couple to photograph at a beautiful wedding at the Peninsula Hotel. Sean and Colleen are so cool, down to earth, in love and just plain *fun* that it almost didn't feel like work at all.
