Not in, like, the gang warfare way.

No, this is a game of blog "tag" that has been going on amongst wedding photographers around the world. The idea is, a "tagged" photographer has to post eight things that people don't know about them and then name 8 other photographers to do the same.

My friend Jessica Claire tagged me so now I have to come up with eight things you don't know about me.

Oh, the pressure.

Well, let's start with what I am not going to tell you... I am not going to tell you my Social Security number or my mothers maiden name or first pets name or anything that could enable you to open a credit card in my name and go shopping. I am not going to tell you how many boys I have kissed, the date of my last confession, where the bodies are buried, or who framed Roger Rabbit.

Citizen J


It happened really fast... The letter arrived on Wednesday saying that the ceremony would be on Friday.

Yup, Jonas is being sworn in as a US Citizen today!

And it was a truly wonderful day. Jonas' dear friend Heather joined me at the ceremony and we cheered him and all the others on. And afterwards we went to Custom House for a celebratory drink. (We all also got burgers because we figured, what could be more American than that?)

My favorite part of the ceremony was when they said that between 193 new citizens, 49 countries were represented. And then they called out the names of the countries one by one and each person stood as their country of origin was called. Hearing the diversity of countries was one of those moments that reminds you that we are, indeed, a nation of immigrants. Everyone is from somewhere else. Chills ran through me as I watched 49 different countries come together into one nation.

There were also a whole bunch of television crews there because amongst the 193 people becoming citizens was an 86 year old man in hospice care. He led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance at the end -- a perfect way to end the ceremony.

There were so many photos I wanted to post that I decided to try my hand at a web based slideshow. (It's my first time with this, so hopefully it will work right!)

Land of the Free...




Today, Jonas went in for his American citizenship interview.

It was a two hour interview with a range of questions including civics questions about how our government works.

I have been helping him study for the test that included such questions as, "Who said 'Give me liberty or give me death'?" (Patrick Henry). (You can imagine how tickled I was when he told me that was the first question the interviewer asked him on the test portion! Over achiever that he is got 100% on the test!)

I am so proud to announce that he has been recommended for citizenship!!! He will find out when his swearing in ceremony is in a few weeks, but in the meantime I would just like to say that moments like this give me a chance reflect on this status that I too often take for granted... Being an American is a complicated thing -- The legacy of a million shining moments and a million shameful failings. It is very easy to look at the acts of Americans and either idealize or scorn what being an American means.

But relegating anything to such extremes is often a cop out - an inability to understand nuance and a world where things aren't simply grey, but in fact both black AND white simultaneously. For me, this means that I believe that what it says in the preamble to the Constitution:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America"

...is not a statement of what always *is* but rather a statement of who we aspire to be. And I can embrace the pristine ideal while still acknowledging that the execution is often woefully flawed.

We work to be better. And soon, we the people, will get one more amazing man to help us in the journey.

I love my sisters...


All three of my sisters, Rosana, Nerissa and Penelope and my niece, Jayden, came to stay with us for a week... It is so fun to be a tourist in Chicago and to get to see Chicago through the eyes of a three year old.

We bought a new house!


You can't believe we moved.

I can't believe we moved.

But, yes, we bought a new house in Bucktown where we will live until we are carried out on stretchers. Or until after kid number two... (at which point we will probably be in stretchers, but I digress).

Before you get into it -- Yes, our old place was great. It was huge. But it was not a suitable permanent location. It has very few windows - the light situation was almost intolerable. It was on the alley where we could hear the alley noise constantly. And besides which it was the largest two bedroom apartment you have ever seen... because of the way it was laid out, there was no room to grow into the space in the long haul.

I will take better photos soon -- these are from my crappy camera phone on the day we closed. We went over and had a carpet picnic (except we have, well, hardwood floors) and celebrated out new home.

It is four bedrooms, a huge living room/great room, windows on all four walls, panorama skyline views from our private roof deck and this view to the west overlooking St. Mary of the Angel's.



Moving in together was big step. But making a home together is even bigger.

New York, New York


This weekend I went to New York



I was there to photograph the engagement sessions of two awesome clients,

Melissa and Charles...



and Alison and JohnNick.



While I was there I took advantage of the opportunity and got to spend time with two of my best friends in the whole world, Liz and Cassandra... And because I had my good cameras with me, we took some fun glamour shots of Liz and Cassandra hanging out near Liz's TriBecCA apartment...



And my not so good bar shot camera.



I also got to hang out with my whole posse from business school ... who are the most awesome group of friends a girl could ever hope to know.



You know, the world is bigger -- friends are scattered, time is tight, you lose track. But these friends are different. They are part of me. And though we aren't physically close anymore, every time I see them see them, we pick up as though not a moment has passed...

Spectacular Loft for Rent in Chicago!!


So, although it seems a bit crazy -- Jonas and I are about to close on our new house and will be moving at the end of the month. Our lease on our current place is not quite up yet so we are looking for someone who is interested in either a summer sublet (thru Sept. 30) or is interested in signing a full year lease.

The place is really truly amazing and we have LOVED living here. It is a fantastic space for entertaining and a perfect space for anyone who has home office needs.

- Enormous walk-in closets

We've loved living here but have recently purchased a place. The apartment is available for sublet from July 1 to September 30, and full year lease renewal is an option after that.

Mom in Chicago



In April, my mom came to visit us in Chicago. Ever the crafts person, my mom showed us how to dye Easter Eggs using homemade, natural dyes (red onion, blueberry skins, cherries, etc.)

Gone Fishin'...


Jonas and I are leaving to go on a three week, much needed, vacation in Argentina and Chile.

Thus, Rosalind Weddings will be closed from April 17th through May 9th. Since I will have no access to email and telephone, all emails, phone calls and other correspondence will be returned after May 9th.

Also, print orders and NEW album orders will not go into production until after I return. Delivery of albums in ALREADY in production will resume after May 9th.

Fast Away the Old Year Passes... A Black Tie Event at our house


Jonas and I wanted to end the year in high style so we threw and black tie New Years Eve party at out home. We had Figgy Media there to crank tunes and Josh Gelvan and the Herban Gourmet crew there to caterer the affair. I can't say enough good things about both of them -- they were extraordinary. I highly recommend checking them out!



We were also lucky enough to have my insanely talented friend, Photographer John Mireles there! He was nice enough to take some extraordinary photos and share them with us...

Christmas Holly




Right after we got back from Thanksgiving, Jonas and I got a new kitten. Her name is Holly Golightly.



Miss Muffet does not like her at all.





But we think she is delightful!



And sooner or later, we are sure Miss Muffet will come around. ;-)

Thanksgiving in Palo Alto


The good thing about being with someone who is from another country is that you don't have to compete over which family "gets" you for Thanksgiving. And this was Jonas' first time meeting my family so it was a really special Thanksgiving...



My dad is a wonderful piano player and musician and family sing-a-longs are a staple of our holidays...



My mom makes bread and pies from scratch and my niece, Jayden, is an eager apprentice...

A reason to celebrate...


Sometimes the things that make you happiest actually happen to someone else... Like this last week, when Jonas landed the job of his dreams -- a job in the strategy group at Equity Office, here in Chicago. (I was so happy for him that when he told me he got the job, I actually jumped up and down in our closet, hugging him -- which is maybe a little weird, but not as weird as it sounds because if you remember, we have a really big closet!). It has been so great to watch him grow his real estate business and now to see him land a job in strategy at an incredible real estate titan like EOP, makes me so proud of him, I could just burst!

So, since he is starting tomorrow, we decided to break out the Dom Perignon and have a little celebration in honor of this next phase in his career.

Jonas has been teaching me about a lot about wine since we have been together. I used to be sort of a "spend between $15-20 a bottle and pick a label you think is pretty" kind of gal. But he has been teaching me about many of the more subtle ideas in wine. Tonight was a great lesson in Champagne for me...

I love the beautiful old world packaging.



I also learned about the shape of the stemware and how it can completely change the way you experience a the Champagne. Jonas bought special Riedel Champagne flutes, which help the focus the flavor where it meets your taste buds.



I made sure he didn't point the bottle at me when he opened it, since my eyes are my livelihood...



And when you pour, the bottle should never touch the edge of the glass (or go "chug, chug, chug")





So what did I think? Well I am not much of champagne drinker, but if you have reason to celebrate, this is good stuff and I would highly recommend it!!

And in the afterglow of what has been a very good week, I am just sitting here feeling incredibly blessed, that we have this life, that we have each other and that we have so much to celebrate.

Moving Recap


Let me start by saying that I am beyond thrilled that I get to wake up everyday with Jonas. He is the love of my life and despite all the boxes and tape and missing screws and strained backs and crap with no home, I would do it all again in a second.

Having said all that, I have come to the conclusion that there is a reason that the Nomads all died off. Moving sucks. And moving in *together* means that your new place becomes the Noah's Ark of Household Crap.

Two jars of peanut butter
Two cork screws
Two can openers
Two hammers
Two tubes of tooth paste
Two TVs
Two Costco sized Laundry Detergents
Two sets of West Wing DVDs
Two toaster ovens
Two officially licensed, lame-ass foam fingers from the cheering sections of our respective colleges
15 half empty bottles of Windex (apparently Windex breeds like bunny rabbits on the Ark)
Enough opened half containers of everything else you think it might be easier to scrap it all and start over than to try to sort through it.
And the list goes on...

But all that is just the cynic in me talking. I didn't start out like that. I started out as I always do with a PLAN.

I boxed up everything, neatly, systematically and some would say, anal retentively.



I scheduled the best movers in the known universe (Moishes Movers -- seriously they were awesome. Jonas used them too.)



And I was convinced that I would have everything up and running again by Thursday night.

But the moving God's had other plans.

Wednesday was packing day for me and moving day for Jonas (he has less stuff so his guys were able to do it in one day). Like I said, the guys from Moishes were great. They were so nice to me as I started sporadically and inexplicably crying as I watched my life get packed up. (I know, I know - it's weird to cry about packing up!)







Miss Muffet was very skeptical of this whole situation. Every time she would try to hide under something, the movers would box it up and move it out.







I can't really look at it all like this. I have lived here for 6 and a half years - longer than I have lived anywhere except my parents house growing up. It's just stuff -- I know. But in a way, it has defined everything about the life I have built for myself. And seeing like this just makes it really clear that that life is about change a lot.



After my movers left for the day, I met Jonas over at our place to see how his movers were making out.

Jonas' movers were also really great and super nice!



I was really glad that Jonas' wine collection made it over in tact because by Thursday night, I was literally dumping whole boxes looking for a corkscrew to pour myself a drink. (you would think that with two corkscrews between us we would be able to find at least one, but this is a great example of how the moving gods mock and toy with us.)



I also brought Miss Muffet over on Wednesday night. Miss Muffet wasn't too keen on it at first, but she is adjusting.





Thursday was my moving day. I also had a LOT more stuff than even I realized. It took two trips to move it all.

As luck would have it, Jonas had a really important interview on Thursday so I found myself on Thursday afternoon drowning in six years of boxes. And I want to put away my camera gear in the cabinet, but I can't put it away because I can't hang the shelf because I don't know where the screws are and I can't go to Home Depot to buy more screws because I have to wait for the cable guy who can't buzz us because our names aren't on the door yet and he can't call me because the phone isn't hooked up because I use Vonage and I need the internet to activate my phone line. And I can't have him call on my cell phone because I don't know where the charger is.

So I think I will just have a drink and try to make it all go away. But I can't find the corkscrew and although I am frustrated, I am not (yet) prepared to bash the top off the bottle and drink straight from the broken neck. So I dump no fewer than 15 boxes out and FINALLY find the corkscrew and pour myself a drink. Which is how Jonas found me when he got home from his interview.

Somehow, over the next four days, we have managed to make a home and even had a few close friends over to christen the joint.

And my office now has everything it absolutely needs: internet, phone, fax and access to all my critical files, so I am in great shape too.





And tonight, I get to crawl into bed with Jonas and not have to drive home in the morning.

Because I am home.

And I love it here.
