Ruthanne Robertson Portfolio- About Me

I like a thing simple but it must be simple through complication. Everything must come into your scheme, otherwise you cannot achieve real simplicity.

Gertrude Stein

This would serve as explanation for the paradox of there being 6 computers in our home, yet we make toast over an open flame on the stove. Everything does come into our "scheme"; yet always in its most direct form. This is where the simplicity comes in- it is NOT simpler to make a good loaf of bread myself, yet, the bread itself is much simpler. The same might be said for the garden- vegetables are far easier to BUY- even organic ones. The process of growing food is a year-round activity and simple in it's action, put a seed in the ground, a little water and sun, bushels of veggies arise. Simple, but "everything" comes into that plan- weather, season, phase of the moon, plant it here or over there.

I was always told to focus in my younger days. I never did too much. This has come in quite handy over the years, as I've worked in so many different media and materials. It's a very blurry distinction I draw between art and my "real" life. Somehow baking, gardening, weaving, spinning and designing all fall under the same rubric for me.

How to sum this up? In everything, go to the source, look for the essential, and get your hands dirty.
