Deeper in .NET, Eventually, Probably

Some time ago I said that I'd write up my thoughts on the Wisconsin .NET Users Group's Deeper in .NET conference which was held earlier today. The only thought I can share at the moment is that it's too bad they held this on a weekend; I missed it...

There was a time when it wouldn't have made a difference. Back in ICOM's early days, the mid-80s, I'd regularly work seven day weeks without giving it a thought. I remember going into the building on Greenfield Avenue early in the morning, closing my door, and tearing through code, only to emerge some hours later and find the building almost deserted; I'd actually managed to forget that it was a Saturday.

By 1990 change was in the air. ICOM was still a cool place to work, but I started seeing a wonderful lady, and my sisters began improving the planet by adding my nieces and nephews to it. In 1992 my wonderful lady became my wife. In a span of just a few years, filled with both moments of joy and some life-changing tragedy, family had reclaimed my spare time.

10 years from now, 20 tops, every line of code I've written to date will be obsolete and long out of service. Worthless. So instead of listening to lectures on .NET technology today, I watched my two youngest nephews tear around in Spider Man costumes. The long-term payoff is greater.

Sometimes I'll still work on the weekends, or find time to attend something like the Deeper in .NET conference. Today, I simply had a better offer.
