31,000 Scientists Refute Global Warming

Or so says retired meteorologist John Coleman in a bit of spam (as seen on Snopes.com), forwarded to me by some dear friends. After a little reading on this claim, I sent this reply...

An Open Letter to the RIAA

I support the idea of legal music downloads, and I agree that copyright holders deserve to be compensated for their work. All the music I've downloaded has been through Apple's iTunes music store, and everything on my iPod comes from either that or CDs I purchased in the past...

Serenity

The FOX television science fiction series Firefly was "hailed by critics as one of the most cancelled series of the year," joked creator Joss Whedon. Shown out of order by FOX, Firefly was pulled after just 11 episodes. But the strength of the DVD sales, which included an additional 3 episodes that never aired, helped Whedon get the backing of Universal Studios for a feature film. That film, Serenity, arrives in theaters today...

Beware of Dog

Too much time in front of the computer? Learning too many new technologies in your spare time? I, too, had these problems, and had just started working through a pretty good Python tutorial. Then my wife and I adopted a dog...

April Fools

Geek humor really comes alive on the web on April Fool's day. Some of it isn't terribly funny, but it's all in good fun just the same. Slashdot veers even further away from sanity than usual, and there are more nonsensical stories and hoaxes out there than even Wikipedia can document. My favorite of the day, though, arrived in my email as the Effector newsletter from the Electronic Frontier Foundation: check out their April Fool's issue...

ePortal.com

It being Saint Patrick's Day, and me being awake most of the night with a sneezing and coughing wife, I thought I'd take a moment to hoist a pint of Guiness to Duane Fahey's ePortal.com blog...

The internet has given us an unprecedented tool for publishing everything from literature to software. At this moment, I'm just two mouse clicks away from making this message available to every internet-connected computer on the entire planet. In the U.S., I can post pretty much anything I can create, within reason. But suppose I recover a piece of commercial software from 25 years ago from an old cassette? And suppose that the copyright holder is nowhere to be found? Can I post that, or use it in a derived work? U.S. copyright law says no. But according to an alert I received from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, we now have an opportunity to change that...

Firefox Blazes Towards 20 Million Downloads

After just 10 weeks, the new Firefox 1.0 browser has passed 19 million downloads and will blow past 20 million by the month's end, surpassing everyone's expectations. Free versions are available for almost anything out there (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux) in over two dozen languages. But suppose you just use Internet Explorer, the web browser built into Windows. Is there really any reason to download something else? Definitely...

Tsunami

At this moment, CNN is reporting the number of dead from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Asia to be "at least 23,000" [update 12/31/2004... now more than 120,000... dear God]. In the midst of our holiday season, the survivors desperately need our prayers and help...
