"Addicts and Angels - A Smuggler's Voyage to Enlightenment" by John Campbell tells the story of John’s fascinating life in exotic locations all over the world. His mother, who was an alcoholic, forced him at the age of 7, into a life of petty crime to feed her addictions. Having lost his childhood by caretaking his mother and being exposed to various forms of severe abuse, John was left with deep emotional wounds. He eventually left home at the age of 17 to join the Merchant Navy and became a sea captain obtaining his Unlimited Captain’s Licence at the young age of 26.
Under the influence of alcohol in his own adult life, John embarked on high risk, dangerous exploits and romantic adventures. He made huge profits smuggling oil and whiskey with his own fleet of ships to far away places such as Saudi Arabia. At home in Britain, he spent ten years serving as vice-chairman for a top English pro soccer club. Living the high life and apparently 'having it all,' his alcohol consumption became a means of masking the inner pain from his childhood wounds - and his dishonest undertakings were a result of an unconscious desire to finally obtain his mother’s approval.
Eventually the pain of staying the same became greater than his fear of change. One day in 1992 an old ex-drinking buddy inexplicably reappeared in his life after 15 years without contact. Listening to this friend who'd been sober for 12 years, John realised that his life was seriously out of control and that his addiction was taking a real toll on his family life, his work and his body. On that day he walked away from it all and checked himself into a rehabilitation centre. Thus began his incredible spiritual awakening and long journey of self-healing.
Having made peace with his past by doing his 'inner work,' John has much to share. In addition to completing his fascinating autobiography, he is an international speaker, talking about his experiences, addiction, family systems, parental alienation, relationships, education and the ‘new children.’
John has a huge, generous heart, tremendous compassion and a deep understanding of people, relationships and life. Newly married to his ‘twin flame,' John & Mary live and love on the beautiful west coast of British Columbia, and when he isn‘t writing, they work tirelessly together on The Angel Project.
