Dr. Pendleton's Recommended
Books

The books listed below, (by no means a comprehensive list), have all contributed to my understanding of both myself and others. I have organized my list into two basic categories: Fiction (stories that reveal various insights about our humanity) and Commentary (observations and theories about social and psychological processes). For more online information about literature, follow this link to The Literature Network.

Please note that I do not necessarily subscribe to the ideas presented in the books listed below, but I do believe it is critically important to carefully examine any ideas before either accepting or rejecting them. A great deal can be learned from those who hold disparate beliefs without converting to their way of thinking. Ultimately the "truth" that exists between any two people, or within any cultural groups, may be largely the result of what those people decide to agree upon and may change as the people and/or the groups evolve. It wasn't all that long ago that most educated people believed the earth was flat, and there still some people who continue to hold that belief!

Each book title below is a link that will lead to additional information and reviews (at amazon.com) of the book indicated. Almost all of the authors listed have written other good books and eventually I hope to add information about those books in a manner similar to the information provided by following the nine books* link after Henry Miller's name below. In the meantime any of the one or two books listed for each author below would be a good introduction to that author.
