Podcasts: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Podcast?
Think radio show meets digital recorder, meets iPod.
A Podcast is an audio program broadcast over the Internet instead of the airwaves. It is a method of publishing audio content that breaks free of the barriers of place and time. Although anyone with a computer can download a Podcast and listen to it automatically, most people prefer to listen on-the-go. Listeners can put it on to anything that will play an MP3. The most common device used to play Podcasts is currently the iPod (75% of all MP3 players sold are iPods) However, they can be played just as well on any MP3 player as well as any PDA, and some mobile phones. Anywhere that a portable device can be used, a Podcast can be played.
How do listeners subscribe?
To get started you will need some Podcast aggregator software (the most popular is Apple’s iTunes software) that allows you, the listener, to subscribe to your favorite shows. When new Podcast episodes become available, they are automatically downloaded to the user’s computer and portable device every time they start the software or update their portable device just as a magazine automatically appears in your mailbox.
What is typical podcast content?
Virtually any topic is ripe for a Podcast. Music, News, Literature, Games, Politics, Food, Parenting, Sports and Travel are just some of the many types of Podcasts available. Rough Guides and Rough Guides iToors Podcasts focus on travel and lifestyle content.
