Most of these articles have appeared over the last 12 years or so in several publications, including Modern Liturgy, Pastoral Music, Hosanna, Liturgy Alive, and Today's Parish. I'd like to think that the disappearance of two of those publications was not precipitated by the inclusion of these articles.

I've made very little attempt to update the song selections here, which were made in the years that Gather 2nd Edition and Glory and Praise Comprehensive first appeared. North American Liturgy Resources had not yet been purchased by Oregon Catholic Press. LifeTeen, as such, was in its infancy. I still think that many of the ideas presented in these articles will stimulate pastoral musicians to make choices better from their own repertoires. As I check on this site, and hear from people about the advisability and usefulness of an update to the song selections, I may do that, or figure out some way to automate my own database and make it available on the internet. The articles above are the result of my reflection and experience, especially at the end of my first ten years or so of work as a director of worship and music. But how did I come to these conclusions? What did those of us who started at ground zero with the new liturgy read? Well, there are a few things that we should all know about, and be ready to refer to if necessary. These documents include:

A word of caution: be sure to distinguish between what the documents say and what some people will try and tell you they say. Do some discernment. Read what several others say, consult the authority of your experience.
