Editor’s Note:
For most of the authors in this collection of personal narratives, the writing process consisted of making some pre-writing notes, writing a first draft, conferencing with one or more peers for feedback, rewriting, proofreading, and finally handing in a final copy to the editor (their teacher – yours truly).
In the commercial publishing world it is the editor’s job to proofread and make corrections in the mechanics and spelling of the author’s manuscript — after the author has gone through a number of revisions and rewrites which have presumably caught most of those errors in advance.
Here, the editor has chosen for instructional purposes to place much of the responsibility for proofreading on the writers, providing them with an individual “galley proof” typed copy of their own handwritten manuscript with all their original errors intact for them to find and correct, and then making those changes indicated by the individual authors, and finally reformatting the collection as you see here.
While many errors were noticed by authors on the galleys, many were also missed as you will see. Regardless, I hope you will agree that the result has its own charm!

Once I was looking for something to play with and I dug through everything untill I found my scatboard. I’v been praticing and after I praticed I’v been geting better every day.
My scooter is fun and sometimes I try to go fast and I miss the brake and I fall. Lots of times I go too slow and try to turn and I fall but when I go to fast it is also hard to turn.
My bike is fun but sometimes its out of control! It hapened when my brother and sister had there bikes out I wanted to play with them and I did but then it got out of control we started racing and I whent to fast around the corner and I crashed and I was amazed that I was still on my bike but not the way I expected on my side and I felt I got thrown off. I was scared well I could not be scared because I could barly remember what I did.

But it got ok after a couple of days. I got otter pops when I got hurt it was the Life.
One time I went on a Ferris wheel. When I was just turning eight. And it went up, down, all around. but I didn’t get sick. It was like five minutes. When I first went on it i was scared but I managed. So thats good. After that I went to get cotton candy! Now those are wheels story.

One day my firend said I have two bikes. And I only want one. So she gave me the other bike. But it had a flat tire so I asked my mom for a pump she didn’t answere. So I may not get to have my own pump for my bike. When she asked me I asked her if it was free and she said yes. It had two weels and it was pink with some writing on it. One time I was at my cosins house there was a BIG dreiv way and I was riding a three wheeled bike with my cosin clark and nadily. I was useing my feet and not the pedel so I got a rasberey. I got my first bike when I was about for and a half. At first it had training wheels, so every day we would come out and sit on it and see if my feet would touch the ground. And well we did that we would also have our dad take a mini bike and push us down the hill in our front yard and we’d try too pedal. Usually we would not, because we’d be going way too fast and it was too bumpy.
I got my first scooter wen I was about five years old. It can not go vary fast but it can fold and it can ajust. Now the weles have bumps in them so every time I ride it , it gos “bump bump, bump bump” but I still ride it aannd I still biff on it.
When I was about five and three qerters I rode my very first quad, but it was not mine. It was a friends. His name was Shane and win my big brother Ben or Benjamin was riding it he accidentally ran into Shane but he was fine. Then Shane sold the quad and bought a dirt bike but win his mom found out they had to sell it, but don’t worry he’s getting it back

Wheels

The first wheeled vehicle that I have any memory of was a "kiddy car" I had when I was about two or three years old. It was all red and it was made of metal with a wooden seat. It had one big wheel in front and two little ones behind but there were no pedals. I just had to sit on it and pull myself along with my feet. I think I can remember riding it myself, but it may be just memories of home movies of me or maybe of seeing my younger brother on it when I was a little older and had my first tricycle.
My tricycle was red, too but it also had white and chrome on it. I got it when I turned four. My strongest memory about it was the time soon after I got it that my best friend John Clark and I rode our trikes around the corner from our house and along the sidewalk for several hundred yards past the marsh that was behind our block of houses. It was the first time that I'd been much out of sight of home, so I felt very bold, and a bit scared. We stopped when we came to an odd concrete structure in the grass next to the sidewalk. It had blue-painted metal railings around some steps that went down below the ground's surface and turned a corner to the left. John suggested we go down the steps and see what was down there. We did and when we turned the corner we came to a blue door. I was not sorry to find it locked. Somehow we got it into our heads that there was a wolf behind that door and we suddenly got scared. We ran up the stairs, jumped on our trikes, and pedaled home as fast as we could go.
I got my first bicycle for my tenth birthday. It was a 26" Raleigh three-speed. It was red. I loved it. We took it to Ohio when we moved there for a year a month later. I rode it to school everyday. I remember that some of the streets in the small town we lived in there were brick and very bumpy on a bike. I also remember riding my bike through the big piles of autumn leaves on Elm Street where we lived. And riding in the snow the first time it snowed. Of course I skidded and fell and wasn't allowed to ride in the snow after that.
My first ten speed I bought with money I'd earned painting our house in New Zealand where we'd moved when I was fifteen. It was red, too. When I was sixteen I rode it on what was to be the first of many long cycle tours around that beautiful country. I went with two of my classmates on a 1000-mile ride to Milford Sound, a famous fjord at the southern end of the South Island that we lived on. We took sleeping bags and a tent and camped along the way. It took us about two weeks. It was a great adventure.
When I was 26 I bought my first gasoline-powered car. In cars I've gone a lot more miles and a lot faster, but my best memories of wheels will always be from those that turned under my own power.
