REEF

our field trip to the Redwood Environmental Education Fair at College of the Redwoods

on the bus
charging up the stairs to our first session in Forum 105
acting like college students (well...some anyway)
our first session (luck of the draw) was "WowThat Cow!", presented by the Humboldt County Cattlewomen, which began with this video
and was followed with more "Cattle Enhance the Environment" propaganda, and then a question and answer period...
before testing our absorption of it with a game of jeopardy
our second session was Radical Reptiles and Friends, presented by Kritter Kountry...
kicked off with this Burmese Boa
whom everyone got to touch in turn
Cody's love of snakes is perceptible here in the body language of his hand on the snake's back
ever imperturbable, James looks into the open mouth of this very large snake from close range
Mr. Catton forgets the name of this lizard, but it had something to do with the spines on it's back
one big iguana
at close range
a monitor lizard, relative of the famed Komodo Dragon
which everyone was also given the opportunity to pet
after lunch it was on to Session 3: "The Compass Conundrum" presented by the Bureau of Land Management
first we learned how to use a compass
then how to pace off a distance
and calculate an average
before starting on an orienteering course set up as a riddle with clues about a mystery animal at each destination
pacing off the distance on a compass course from the second hidden clue to the third
this was clue number five
Jeremy pencils in the code letter that came with clue number five
reading clue number six
our last session was "Meet Wild & Exotic Animals Close Up & Personal", presented by Wild Things
the show featured a lot of characters including this lemur
and this Western Diamondback Rattlesnake,
this pair of Bushbabies,
this Spider Monkey,
and this large monitor lizard,
...here walking across stage...
and almost getting away!
