Fourth Graders Interview Veterans

for Veterans Day November 2003

Rachele Allen
I am interviewing my Papa, Norman Ambrosini. He served in the U.S. Navy for 5 years from May 1944 through June, 1949. He joined the navy at the age of 17. During World War II he was in the 3rd fleet, task force 38 in the South pacific under Captain Dixie Kiefer. He was assigned on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga, an aircraft carrier. He was a fireman aboard the ship. around 3,500 men served on the ship. They fought from the Philippines north towards Japan. In one battle, the Ticonderoga was attacked by Kamikazes. Two of the planes crashed on the ship. The most days at sea at one time was 64 days without seeing land. His ship was with the U.S.S. Missouri at Japan in Tokyo Bay when the armistice was signed. After the war the ship was used to take troops home. Papa also served aboard the the U.S.S. Henrico and the Yard Oiler-201. Papa said some memories are better left untold!!!!!!!!!!



Zachary Barnhart
I interviewed my mom and my stepdads friend, Richard Poletski. He served for four years from 1989-1993. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a welder. As a Marine everyone is a rifleman. He had to clear mine fields and drive tanks. We were in peace and three fourths of the way through we went to war. There are three names for the war. They are Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and The Gulf War. He was 18 years old when he first joined the armed forces. He wore a camouflage outfit or dress blues. His most intense memory was when we were at war moving into Kuwait. Saddam lit oil fields on fire and the daytime sky turned instantly black. They thought chemical warfare was dropped and they thought they were going to die.



Samantha Beacham
I am interviewing my dad David Beacham. My dad is in the United States Coast Guard. He has been in the service for 19 years. My dads job is air sea rescue aviation survival technician. My dad served during the gulf war but never went into a combat zone. If my dad had to go to Iraq his job would be on a coast guard cutter and be a part of their air sea rescue team. My dad David Beacham has been overseas. I asked him if he has been hurt before and he said, Yes he has broken his collar bone and some ribs. David Beacham has an air medal for saving some pilots that crashed their plane. He has a Coast Guard accomodation medal for saving some fishermen in Alaska and an achievement medal for rescuing people in hurricanes. David Beacham is my hearow.



Jeremy Burt
Dan Jennings Vietnam WarMy Uncle served in the Air force, he joined When he was 17. He served for six years,
He had a buddy name Mac.
My uncle worked as an Aircraft crew chief.
He enjoyed living in other countries. He lived in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany.
He went when there was war, and left in Peace.




Cody Farrel Briggs
Im interviewing my great great uncle Brad. He was on a ship. The ships name was the USS Richard B. Anderson and it was a destroyer. His duty was to make sure all the guns work. He was in the war for 4 years from April 1948 to April 1952. He was in the Korean war. he was a fireman. He is 75 years old now. One of his near disasters was when a torpedo was coming toward the ship and my great great uncle sent a message up to the captain and they turned the ship around and the torpedo kept on going and hit the shore. He served in the Navy for 4 years.
I thank all of you veterans out there for everything you did to protect all of us and our country.

Billy Bean
I have interviewed my moms friend Cecil Krenz. He served in the Army for four years in World War 2. he went to war in Europe. He was very scared and so he found refuge in a fox hole. He drove for his kernel and he did not like the war. He had lots of friends, and he seen lots of people die. He thought the only good thing about the war was it eventually brought peace.




Cody Chapman

My grapos name is geff he was in the war for 3 yeers he has five guns. he would have beens. he would have a lot of medels and ribens.



Kieran Cook

I am interviewing my gradpa Gery Cook. He served his country from 1957 to 1964 that is 7 years. He was in the national gaurd, we were at peace thankfuly or he might have died. He said he felt very well. He used 3 types of wepons M-1 rifle, carbin-b rifle, and a 50 cal machine gun. Thank you.




Bonnie Cooke
I interviewed my uncle Mike. He was in the Vet Nam war. He was a sargent in the army. I think he was in the military intelligence. He was stationed in fort Benning, Georgia.
He was drafted and served for 2 years.
He’s thankful he made it home alive.




Dwayne Cooper
I am writeing about my grandpa Master Sargent Billy Moser he worked for the Air Force from 1969 -1993. He was in the Vietnam war, he worked at Bien Hoa Air Force for 1 Year he was a C-123 Mechanic, he also got a commedantion medal. Then he went to Florda for 4 years from 1970-1974 he was also a C-123 Mechanic there. Then he went to Yokota Air Force base Japan for 2 years from 1974-1976. Then he went to C.A. castle Air Force base for 2 years from 1976-1978. Then he went back to Yokota Air Force base Japan for 3 years from 1978-1981. Then he went to Grand Forks for 2 years from 1981-1983. Then he went to Okinawa Japan he also got a commedation medal there, he was in Okinawa Japan for 5 years from 1983-1987. Then he went to Milden Hall England for 4 years from 1987-1991. Then he went to March Air Force base for 2 years from 1991-1993 while he was there he got a Military service medal.




Matthew Cotton
I interviewed my mom, Janine Cotton. She was in the Army for 2 years. She was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She was an Animal care specialist and did research work. She said sometimes it was fun, but sometimes not. While in Basic Training she ate 3 normal meals a day and everyone had to march to the dining hall. Then she told a funny story. she was in a ankle cast during part of Basic Training and while out in the field She got to help her Drill Sergeant set up trip charges for a joke. When the troops came back to camp they set off the trip charges and everyone ran for cover.



Jacob Downing
I am interviewing my uncle Joe Downing was in the Service 1965-1967.
He was in the Army
Joe was drafted 2 years
there was a war when he started it was the vietnem war He was not injared
When they got bomed Joe cold rebuild it he was a carpenter befor he came to war
He did heavy Artillery in the war



Billy Earls
I am interviewing James Lewis-tree. James Lewis-tree was in the U.S. Navy from 1966-1969 and he joined at 18 years old. he servry as a boiler tender aboard the 350 USS Chevalier during Vietnam war. He liked being in the navy but the food was either canned or frozen and they had no t.v. at all. He saw a lot of countries and how the people lived in those countries.
James Lewis was born and rased in Eureka, C.A. After he served in the navy he came back to Eureka and rased a family. he has ben working on boats all his life and still does to this day.



Chelsey Gratz
I interviewed my moms friend, Michel Wright. He traveld every state but Hawaii. He was in the Coast Guard. He was in the Service for 20 years. Some of his best memeroies were visiting South America. His duties were Drug Enforcement. He was in peace and war when he was in the Service. He had three friends, Bill Teroni, Ray Marino, and Bob Stuart. He has a lot of medals Some of them were: good conduct, achievement, and national defense. He went in the service when he was 17. Now he 40 years old.



Derek Hanson
I interviewed Bill, my mom’s friend. Bill served in the armed forces for 20 years from 1973 to 1993. Bill was in the Coast Guard. Some of Bill’s duties were navigator & law enforcement & search and rescue. It was at wartime. Bill said he had a good time.



Zackery Jones
My Great Grandpa

1. When and how long did great grandpa serve in the armed forces?
He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1947. After that He worked for the Dept. of Defense as A sivilian until He retired in 1982

2. What branch of the armed services did grandpa serve in?
He served in the Navy

3. Can grandpa tell me about some of your duties?
No because He was in Navy intelligence and it is top secret. He traveled to bases all over the World. He worked in the pentagon.

4. Was our country at war or peace when grandpa was in the service.
Yes He was in W.W.2

5. Will grandpa share some memories of grandpaes experiences in the service.

Taylor McMillin
I am interviewing my Grandpa Butch. He was in the Navy. He served from 1963-1967 He was a shipmate he was in charged for tanks. He had to go to war. He remembers he met a lot of nice people and cool places. He had blue and white suits. He tried to make us have peice.



Brittany Phillips

The man I interviewed was 17 when he went into the Airforce in San Antonio Texas. He went into the airforce looking for a future The first thing he learned was that he was not in control. he also learned that being in the service is like living with your parents, (lots of rules.) He was in the service for 6 months and left because he was not military material.
He believes that war is necessary but ugly. He also believes in dying for his country. He did not have to fight during the 6 months he was there. His final words were war is scary and the service was all that he thought it would be.



Jesse Rovai
I interviewed Dan Marchetti. He served in the army from 1970-1973. He was in the Military Intelligence. He Analyzed Photos to see What was going on. He was watching the Russian troops. His job was top secret. He had a top secret clearance. the vietnam War was just ending. He remembers germany. He had a 8-5 job. He hopes it made a difference. He couldn’t talk about some stuff because it is still top Secret.



Tee’Ara Smith
I am interviewing my Uncle John. He was an Army Veteran and he served in the Army for 3 years. He did it because he wanted to serve his country. He sometimes felt that a lot of decisions that were made weren’t fair. He said that it was hard physically. He said he was mad sometimes and he would get over it. He served in Army division and he would refuel helicopters. When he served, our country was at peace and one of his best memories were being around the people he worked with. When he comes to my house now, he plays football with my dad. I really admire him because he is cool and nice and I love him. Thank you.



Taqurri Sanderson
Hi my name is Taqurri Sanderson. I’m interviewing my Grampa Steve. He served in the Army. He served for 3 years. He didn’t like it that much because he was drafted. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was in the Mechanical division. He fought in the Vietnam War. He started in 1968. When he joined the Army, he felt good. He liked some of it, but one part he hated - how people got treated. He was never injured. He wore fatigues. And he used an M-14 Rifle for war in Vietnam. He felt like he was fighting for a cause - a good cause. And my daddy was not born yet at the time.

I intervied my grandpa his name is Cecil Hair. My grandpa served many years in the army. he was a brave soldier. our country was at war when my grand father Cecil Hair served in the army of the United States of America.



Sam Sprague
I interviewed my Dad who was in the Navy during vietnam on the Hancock. It was a aircraft carrier. He worked on the yellow gear. He was a 3rd class petty officer the food was terrible on the ship. there was 3000 men on the ship. He got 1 minute of water to take a shower. The water was needed to launch the planes on the catapolt. He would spend about 110 days on the combat line and then two weeks in Port. then back to the line. He got to go to Hong Kong Phillipines Japan and Hawaii. He went Past a lot more. He was shot at by a sniper in the Phillipines - said it sounded like a Deer rifle. He won a bunch of metals he got sick. The doctor couldn’t Figure out what it was he was given a medical Discharge.



Kyle Surwillo
I am interviewing my stepdad He has ben serving in the armed Forces 1986-2003. He works in the U.S. coast gard. He went on a small boat and for serch and reskue. Both war and peac time. He had hellped three people from the cold wate after there boat fliped over in the ocan.
