Opting out at the post office

The U.S. Post Office is helping direct mailers find you. Here's how to stop it.

The U.S. Post Office is helping direct marketers find you and thereby contributing to the bulk mail problem. Worse, these unsolicited mailings could be used by "dumpster divers" to steal your identity. Here's how to convert USPS into an ally, rather than a foe:

• Twice a month, USPS sells direct marketers the names and addresses of anyone who has moved and has completed a permanent change of address form. By indicating that your address change is temporary rather than permanent, you'll still receive mail forwarding services for the same amount of time, but the post office won't sell your personal information to direct marketers.

• You can write USPS and request that your name be removed from the National Change of Address List. The address is:

National Customer Support Center
United States Postal Service
6060 Primacy Parkway--Suite 201
Memphis, TN 38188-0001

• USPS forms 2150 and 1500 allow you to opt out of receiving sexually titillating mail (you must attach a copy of the mail in question). Since you get to decide what is sexually titillating, you can opt out of receiving almost anything! Once the post office receives this form, it will be illegal for the advertiser to send you further bulk mail.
