Toast of the Town: A Formula for Success

Thousands of pounds worth of research—yours for the taking.

A mathematical research project recently completed at Leeds University isn't likely to win a Nobel Prize, but Denny's restaurants will want to test the findings rigorously.

After three months work and £10,000 in research, scientists have determined the perfect formula for buttered toast (shown at left). H represents thickness, Cp the specific heat, P density, T the initial temperature of the toast, w the weight, and subscript a and b toast and butter respectively.

Researchers still can't explain why the likelihood that a piece of toast will fall with the buttered side down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet beneath.

But science presses on!
